What: The KKK bombed the church killing 4 girls.

Where: Birmingham, Alabama

When: September 15, 1963

Why: They bombed the church as a scare tactic and to cause intimidation.

Interesting Fact: This was the third bombing over 11 days.

Effect of the event: This added the the rage of the African Americans to keep pushing through to get the law passed.

What: The first group of African Americans who integrated into the previously all white school of Little Rock Central High School.

When: The school integrated in September of 1957

Where: This occurred at Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Why: At this time, the NAACP decided to integrate these nine students based on their academic ability to start a movement of integrating schools instead of segregating them.

Interesting Fact: Ernest Green was the first African-AMerican to graduate from a previously all white high school.

Effect on the movement: After this, many schools began to integrate.

What: Rosa Parks refused to give up her front seat to a white man.

Where: Montgomery, Alabama

When: December 1, 1955- December 20, 1956

Why: She was tired of living in a white man's world.

Interesting Fact: Rosa Parks was a civil right activist before this event.

Effect of the event: This event made the start of this whole movement.

What: The KKK set the freedom bus riders bus on fire.

Where: Anniston, Alabama

When: May 14, 1961

Why: The KKK burned the bus as a scare tactic and to cause intimidation. They wanted to prove their thoughts of blacks having a bus to ride.

Interesting Fact: The mob of whites held the door shut so they could not get out and let them burn.

Effect of the event: This event made the blacks keep challenging the Jim Crow laws. It made them never stop till they got what they deserved.

What: Civil RIghts march from Selma to Montgomery to try and get black voting rights.

When: March 25, 1965

Where: Selma, Alabama to Montgomery, Alabama

Why: This was done in an effort to register black voters in the South.

Interesting Fact: They first attempted the march on March 9, 1965, but had to turn around when state troopers blocked the road.

Effect on the movement: That August, the Voting Rights Act was passed, allowing African-Americans to vote.

What: All these people gathered in Washington DC to march.

When: August 28, 1963

Where: Washington DC

Why: The march was organized to "shed light on the political and social challenges African Americans continued to face across the country."

Interesting Fact: The idea of this march was first planned 20 years earlier in order to make African-Americans' struggles known.

Effect on movement: Black and whites were working together for racial equality.

What: Riots that killed two and injured hundreds.

When: September, 1962

Where: University of Mississippi

Why: African-American, James Meredith had been attempting to enroll in Ole Miss, but had been denied since 1960 due to his race.

Interesting Fact: James Meredith left the Civil Rights Movement after the March Against Fear to become a stockbroker.

Effect on movement: This is one of the events that impacted the Brown vs. Board of Education decision.

What: This is a law that ended segregation and banned employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

When: July 2, 1964

Where: US Congress, impacted South specifically.

Why: This was the whole point/goal of the civil rights movement.

Interesting Fact: The bill was signed was signed with at least 75 pens.

Impact on movement: Discrimination became illegal and the civil rights activists had achieved one of their biggest goals.

What: James shot Martin while he was standing on his balcony.

Where: Memphis, Tennessee

When: April 4, 1968

Why: He was assassinated because James didn't like how Martin Luther King was leading the people towards what they wished.

Interesting Fact: This was the second attempt of someone trying to kill Martin Luther King.

Effect on movement: His assassination made more people stand up to be a leader. There was many more laws signed after his passing.

What: The KKK chased the trio down and murdered them.

Where: Neshoba County, Mississippi

When: June 21-22 1964

Why: They were registering to be able to have blacks vote.

Interesting Fact: Thousands of bodies lay there many of them unidentified.

Effect on movement: This event made it so more Africans would realize what was happening they would hopefully join in and take a stand. The Freedom Summer campaign helped so as many black could attempt to vote.
