Living in the time of the Industrial Revolution is undoubtedly difficult for a family of 10. The economy however was increasing drastically for the industrialists but the workers were being overworked, underpaid and had to tolerate the deadly working environment for approximately sixteen hours each day. As a child, Mary began working as a clerk in Melbourne at the age of 14 which was extremely unlikely for children at the time who began working in mills and factories as young as 8. Most jobs at the time consisted of miners, farmers, teachers, policemen, traders, defense force and doctors. Wages were extremely low with men earning around 11 cents per hour and women earning around half of that which made funding the Sisters of Saint Joseph and her other organisations for child education extremely difficult and challenging. However, this did not set her back. In fact, she is now known for her commitments and impact on others who have experienced difficult times similar to her situation.

Priestly- Mary would pray to God as part of her daily practices and would preach and teach hymns to the children who she was involved with at the time. Mostly the children in Penola. Her mother was very religious which sparked her love and compassion for Jesus and helping others who are less fortunate and come from the same situation as her. She also sacrificed the possibility of moving up to the middle or upper class as she had the teaching skills to do so.

Kingly- As the leader of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, her and her following sisters used their power to guide young people towards a hope for the future. Giving them as much guidance and support in their learning and developing education. Her organisation was not for profit making it accessible to those around them and influenced others in later years to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.

Prophetic- Mackillop stood up for the rights of others and her personal beliefs without fearing the complications it might later cause. She gave people a voice, an opportunity to talk about the injustices such as working conditions, gender inequality and aboriginal rights. Her main belief was that the power of knowledge and education should be provided to all no matter their class, gender or race. Mary founded the Bay View House for girls which supplied them with a range of new skills and subjects and St Joseph with Father Woods.

Mackillop took many actions to succeed at what she is known for which primarily was child education. Mary’s goal was to give lower class children especially girls, the opportunity to learn and grew. Her soul value was that all children should have the ability to undertake new life skills that would benefit them for the future. She shared the same beliefs with others such as Father Woods and the other sisters which was one remarkable action because she allowed other to lead her including the poor and the children she taught. This was made possible by her commitment to God and Jesus guiding her.

The Parable of the good Samaritan reflects with the core message of St Mary Mackillop. Mary radicalised society by defeating the stereotype of who deserves a right to education. This has inspired her by being compassionate no matter the consequences you might have to face or challenges to overcome. The fear of Judgement overpowered the priest and the Levites's willingness to help someone who is suffering. Although they had to obey religious orders, the Samaritan broke stereotypes much like Mackillop did and proves that love has no boundaries and others desperate needs should be above your own.
