While I feel the attack on fossil fuel use is an attack on the main revenue producing industry this province has and will have for many years into the future and will ultimately be the equivalent of us shooting off our own feet, I do believe the best way to force a reduction in fuel use for transportation is to target the high fuel consumption vehicles. I think a good approach is to have an annual vehicle registration charge that is related to the vehicle's rated fuel consumption per 100km. That gives persons an incentive to buy fuel efficient vehicles and penalizes those who purchase large trucks/SUVs to simply drive around town or for the twice annual trips to the cottage.

We should promote e-bikes as an efficient and sustainable way to commute, especially in our urban areas. Here in Corner Brook we have an e-bike rental program, and it's a great way to get light exercise while getting to work. Biking is usually a major work-out due to all the hills, but e-bikes get around that problem so you don't arrive at work sweaty and tired. It would be nice to see expansion of this program especially into St. John's.
