A tsunami is a series of large ocean waves usually caused by underwater earthquakes. Other causes include volcanic eruptions, landslides, or underwater explosions. When the ocean floor suddenly shifts, it pushes water upward, creating waves that travel very fast across the sea.

Tsunamis can cause serious damage when they reach the shore. The waves grow taller and stronger in shallow water, flooding coastal areas, destroying buildings, and endangering lives. To reduce the impact, early warning systems and disaster preparedness are very important.
