What are the changes he experiences, and how does this allow him to grow as a person? - Afghanistan, Quetta

Point

Enaiatollah adapts and evolves with big changes a lot, the biggest change of the book is when his mother had left him and he had to survive on his own. This change allowed him to grow as a person, because he suddenly was on his own, and he had to survive on his own. During this process he had to make a lot of choices which a kid of ten years shouldn’t have to be making on his age.

Example

“So I got out from under the covers, put my shoes on, rubbed my eyes and went to find the owner of the place to ask if he’d seen her”

Explanation

This quote already shows the first decision he has made, and this is a really mature decision, because he has thought thoroughly about what to do and he chooses to ask for help which is a really good decision in his case.

Imagery - Pakistan, samavat Qgazi

Point

In this chapter, especially pages 34 and 35, you really get the feeling how he feels and you start to imagine how the situation must be. This shows that Fabio Geda really tried to include imagery in these pages, and of course further on in the book.

Example

“Enaiat where are you? Here I am kaka Rahim. Bucket and rags. Not the new rags, stupid. The ones hanging in the yard. I’m running kaka Rahim.”

Explanation

These sentences really got me to feel the stress and the speed of how everything went. Imagine the two whole pages being like this, Enaiat had to do everything exactly as how his boss told him to. Even though the circumstances were awful, and the smell was horrible. Enaiat was running everywhere he could to get all the materials and he had to do things he really didn’t want to, but he did it because otherwise he had no place to sleep and eat.

Point of view - Turkey

Point

This chapter, actually the whole book, is written in a certain point of view; first person singular (“I”). You can also see this in the book because Enaiat talks about his life in his point of view, he mentions others but it isn’t written in “he did”, or, “Enaiat did”, but it is written as “I did”. Another reason the book is in first person, is that during the chapters, the author says something to Enaiat, so you know Enaiat is actually telling his own story.

Example

“Where did you learn … wait and see.” - Page 137

Explanation

This quote shows an example of when Fabio asks something to Enaiat during the telling of the story by Enaiat. You can see that it does not belong to the story Enaiat is telling because it is written in italic, so that distinguishes it from the story.

What role do country borders play in the way that humans are connected in the story? How do borders connect or divide the people? What are the consequences of this for Enaiatollah? - Greece

Point

Country borders play a big role in this book, because Enaiat is moving to different places all the time, and in every country he is experiencing all new things. On the other hand, Enaiat is treated the same way in every country, but that is because he came there illegally. So borders divide Enaiat from all the people who got there in a legal way, the fact that Enaiat is an illegal is very dangerous because he can be arrested if he isn’t being careful, this happened a few times in the book.

Example

“I hardly had the time to even be aware of this police car before I was inside it.” - Page 160

Explanation

This quote shows how careful you must be otherwise you’re arrested, this also shows that this is a consequence if you cross the borders illegally, like Enaiat and the younger children who he was with had done.

Favorite passage - Pakistan

Point

My favorite passage is on page 55 when Enaiat tells about his almost-dead experience. I found this very impressing because that is when I realised Enaiat has had a lot of luck during his journey, but also none. Because he had no luck that his mother had left him and that he was born there, but I guess that is just how life is.

Example

“I was fed up risking … or so I was told.” - Page 55

Explanation

This passage just really got to me and I found it a very interesting story, I found it very weird that Enaiat didn’t really seem to care and just told the story, he didn’t share his feelings and emotions about it like he normally does. Maybe he didn’t realise he was so lucky because he was still pretty young at that time.

Foreshadowing - Italy

Point

In the start of this chapter Enaiat talks about what he must do otherwise he may die. But he doesn’t mention the fact that he might die, he just says what he must do and what very important is to do. This is foreshadowing because it kind of tells you what will happen but not totally, you start to expect that something very risky will happen.

Example

“I mustn’t get up yet. I mustn’t move. Keep still, breathe, wait. Be patient. Patience can save your life.” - Page 185

Explanation

This are the first five sentences of this chapter, and the last sentence already shows that there is a possibility Enaiat might die, and/or that he is in great danger, and will be taking a great risk. After these five sentences he continues telling the story, but he starts the chapter with these five sentences, I think he did this to create foreshadowing.

Title meaning - Metafor

The title, in the sea there are crocodiles, is a metaphor because it is not true, crocodiles don't live in the sea. Metaphors are rhetorical figures of speech, they are not true, it compares two subjects without using the words, 'like' or 'as'. So this title relates to what the book is about because if we compare Enaiat with a crocodile, he is not supposed to live in the sea, but Enaiat is left by his mom so he doesn't know where to live and where not to. The situation of crocodiles living in the sea is unusual, but so is the situation of Enaiat. I think the title is very nicely chosen because it makes you wonder what the book is about, and that will make people read the magnificent and moving story of Enaiat.
