The atom we know today is made up of a nucleus, protons, electrons, and neutrons. The nucleus holds protons and neutrons in its core, and electrons orbit the nucleus. We can now confirm that all things are made up of atoms, atoms can be split, atoms can be combined to create molecules, and atoms are not all the same. The number of protons in an atom determine what element it belongs to, although they all may have the same number of protons each atom of a certain element may not be the same in mass and weight.
