Underachievers have so much potential, but if not cultivated the right way they can fade - like this black and white image. Sometimes they lose sight of the goal - like this guy with his back to the hoop. A good coach or teacher can help them get back on track and find their groove.

Underachievers who are not allowed to experience both rigorous and fulfilling tasks might not have the chance to reach their full potential. Much like the basketball player in the picture, underachievers have the ability to "soar" academically. However, if they are not given that opportunity, they might miss their chance to hit their goals.

Underachiever Blame Game

I think the point about "getting away from questioning who is at fault" for underachievers was a message I really needed to hear. Whether in my classroom or the one next door, I have noticed an increase in students who would qualify as Underachievers. Bright, gifted students who could be excellent, but instead coast by on the bare minimum or worse- stop trying altogether. I think that the article had a good point that we should become more solution oriented instead of trying to point the blame at parents, the curriculum, or even ourselves. Regardless of the reason why a student is not engaged, there are strategies we can try for reversing this and helping our underachieving gifted students value their learning again.

There are 4 types of underachievers. The Underachiever - "Under-the-Radar," may be completely overlooked by parents and teachers because he/she coast through school doing the bare minimum and showing little effort; however, because of their academic intelligence, they are making good grades. These students may never learn some important life lessons, like taking risks, learning from failure, or even learning resilience.

Underachievers can be students that are overlooked; often time students who are minorities/low income. They seem like they aren't paying attention or don't care but that isn't always true. They are passionate about their interests but can be bored at school. That can come across as them being unwilling to work or not able to do the work but that isn't always true. As a teacher I think these readings made me really think about taking a closer look at the students I view as not caring or not giving effort and see where this behavior is coming from because they may fit into one of the 4 types of underachievers.
