Many writers get their inspiration for their writing in their own ways. Linda Sue Park's inspiration are personal experiences and current/ancient Korean events. It is shown that in research most of Park's books are set in ancient Korea. One example is the attack in Korea. In 1910 the Japanese took over Korea. Korea got their freedom back in 1945. In the Novel, "When My Name Was Keoko" , the time setting of this book is in the 1940's when a girl named Keoko has been forced to change her name to San-Hee and follow all of the Japanese traditions.

Common trends in her book

A common theme in Parks books they have good lessons. There are some good examples from the books A Single Shard, When My Name Was Keoko, The kite Fighters, And SeeSaw girl. In SeeSaw girl it states "It's not enough, she thought. But I will learn to make it enough." This shows that you need to learn to stop looking for what you want and live with what you have, which is a good moral. In A Single Shard a good moral in it is "I would not steal, Stealing and begging makes a man no better than a dog." This teaches to not steal or beg as it compares a person to a ravenous dog. In The Kite Fighters it says,"'I won't make one for you. But I'll help you make one of your own. You must make the frame, but I'll do the decorations for you,so it will look just the same.'" This shows the lesson of working together makes things easier to accomplish things. In When My Name Was Keoko, Linda Sue Park uses the quote, "You burn the paper but not the words./You silence the words but not the thoughts./You kill the thoughts only if you kill the man./And you will find that his thoughts rise again/in the minds of others-twice as strong as before!"( Park, 2002). This quote shows a theme of don't let others control, change you.

Techniques Park uses throughout her books

Linda Sue Park uses many techniques while writing her books. For example, she uses description, tone and dialogue. She uses a lot of description in When My Name Was Keoko, the reader can see this when she writes, " It seemed that an unknown creature came to life in the brush as soon as I picked it up-a creature light as a dragonfly, smooth as a snake, quick as a rabbit."(Park, 2002). This quote shows that she writes description in her novels when describing kanji. In A Single Shard it also shows great description, tone, and dialogue. In the book it states "Tree-ear saw the potter's eyes, fierce with grief and rage. Min Choked out the last words: 'You are not my son.''' This describes the grief and rage in Min's eyes, the tone in his voice and the way he talks throughout the book. In the book SeeSaw girl it also shows description, tone, and dialogue. In the book it says "Jade thought her mother looked sad for a moment, but then her face was smooth again. 'yes, Jade,' she answered. 'I have learned to make it enough.''' This shows description, tone and dialogue by it describes Jade's mother's face, it shows the sad tone in her voice, and the type of dialogue show a kind of ancient English.

She shows this when she wrote this quote in The Kite Fighters "Young sup watched helplessly as Kee sup tore yet another miniature kite to pieces and threw it savagely on the pile of crumpled paper at his side" This shows her Description Technique
