Drawing out the timid, shy child. Getting them to be more confident about answering questions in front of others.

I finally figured out a way to solve the problem. I call it, "Phone a Friend" --I don't call on students with their hands in the air, I call on random students. After the obligatory wait time, if they can't answer the question they are allowed to "Phone a Friend" --this means they can call on anyone who puts their hand in the air. This works GREAT! It gives everyone (not just the shy kids) an easy out. It takes the pressure off and gives them the power because, if they can't answer the question, they get to decide who DOES!

I did long term subbing for one semester teaching social studies. My biggest focus was classroom management. I think I did okay and will definitely be better when I'm back in a classroom (with that experience done). I think you have to start out a lot more stern then you may be- establish your boundaries right away, be consistent and don't let anybody get away with breaking rules no matter who it is. You can kind of soften up once you have the kids respecting you and knowing you're in charge.
