It was inclusive in terms of the key and general points of PDCs as it involved ‘what is PDC, how it will be applied and why teachers need PDC meetings.’ And I was relaxed that there would be many practical activities and sample plans to make these meetings clear to apply in the future Thanks to clear explanation by our facilitators. Also, warm up and ice breaker activities made us remember their crucial importance for sessions, because they help for a pozitive atmosphere to attend and for motivation.

I was excited while applying for this project as it was supported by British council because I felt that this would be different as it would involve practical activities and give the oppottunities to communicate in English among Peers and with our facilitators :) and it happened so. I was curious about what would be our roles as facilitators and today I learned ‘what and how facilitators conduct’. For the first day, I got the general overview of facilitating and our future practices.’ :)

Have your ideas about teaching young learners changed in anyway? If so, how?

In fact, thinking young learners, I know how to appeal to them and what to take into consideration while teaching according to their needs, interests Or characteristics of learning styles. However, today I have found out that there are some points to concern more handle in different aspects. Children shouldn’t be expected to know the reasons for learning English, rather they should be exposed to language through songs, games or Act-outs and then exist subconciously like the way they learn their basic needs in their daily lives. Also, from now on after today’s session, ı have realized that I should give chance to my students to think and create or make up New words with their own words for existing objects or situations or people as young learners, have their own way of thinking or evaluating thanks to their developed imagination skills. For ex; today there was an example as little brother and half brother :)

1) What needs to be adapted most in ypur coursebooks to help children improve their oral skills?
Our coursebooks include a wide range of vocabulary topics and give topic based units, but they are not enough to support listening and speaking skills. After teaching vocabulary, they don’t give real-like spoken language situations, rather it looks so artificial as they are far from real life experiences. In this point, as teachers We can make our students be exposed to authentic dialogue environment. We can change dialogues, add social language which they use normally in their daily lives. We should think the natural possible contexts which the students may come across in real lives so that students internalize and personalize the situations and have a reason to act out. They will be motivated and willing to talk to each other. Also, while presenting the dialogues, there are only repetititon drills, instead We can enrich by using several drilling types to involve all members. Also, listen and repeat activities should be substitued accordingly with Listen and do activities. ( listen and choose, color, point…)

Firstly, like today’s PDC, teachers can be aware of how oral skills can be presented to us. They make us Scrutinize and think different ways of presentation to students. They can make us create solutions about how to prepare students to dialogues ( via warm up activities or preparing context) , how to teach dialogue turns (drilling- back chain), or stress(beat) rhytm ( finger highlighting). Teachers can share other problems and various possible solutions, then May apply others’ solutions.

Do you think shared reading is a suitable prosedure to use with foreign language children? Why/ Why not?

Absolutely, shared reading is a must to make reading skill progress because children are to be exposed to how to aproach text to understand in a motivating way. And it reminds metacognitive reading strategies as students learn how to think, question, visualize or comment about text while reading together as they also see Teacher modelling too. Unfortunately, most teachers make children read aloud and wait them understand by just following words, while comprehending sentence by sentence or students get puzzled when they see unknown word as they focus just that sentence rather Than the whole.ın our conditions, We have too many students in one class and have just 60 minutes for a week. Anyway, as teachers We can arrange the stories or Texts by giving break for the NeXT weeks or choosing appropriate stories to their levels, interests and some simple crafts or realia to use during reading together. As teachers, We should model and give chance them to work together to get meaning by the help of supporting ideas. Also, for shared reading procedure, media litearacy could be involved, too. As today’s world getting more digital, teachers can include cartoons, comics or online stories even simplified real stories .

Maintaining a balance between children’s environment and acceptable behaviour is one of the greatest challenges that primary language teachers face. 1) Do you agree or not? 2) What challenges do teachers face? And how do they manage it?

1) Yes, I agree.
2) ı have had the chance to teach from primary to high school Students since I started teaching in 2011. The most challenging one is secondary school students as they are passing from childhood to adolescence so they are hard to appeal to. There needs more preparation to get their attention, I think. However, primary school learners are more possible to manage in class if I care their characteristics in the classroom. Young learners are kinesthetic, likely to be distracted by anyting ( by peers, class physical conditions such light, voice even teachers’ body language). Also, as they are children they can be affected more by their families background, socio- economic conditions so as teachers We should try to know about them. For example, if they have problems in their families, they are generally more likely to misbehave in class, however if We know We can handle accordingly. Let me tell how to deal with possible problems. I definitely believe that first as teachers We should try to make our learners like our subject and feel happy for our lessons. Then, We should negotiate with our students and prepare class rules altogether. We should make and believe in the necessity of the rules. There should be class and teacher routines which students get accustomed to in which there is predictable positive learning atmosphere. Teachers should give responsibilies for the students so they will be feel that they are important and affect each other in class. Also, if there are distracted students, teacher can give different düşten or responsibilities so that they need to be involved actively in a way in class. I think, to manage a class, teachers should be patient and çalmakta as much as possible and never insult or soğur at them. Rather, We can lessen game or song activities which they like if they don’t follow lesson or cause problems. They will know that there is a negotiation between they and their teacher. That is all for now :)

1. Are there any tips or techniques from the sessions today that you could use to manage your PDCs positively? 2. Are there any other elements of classroom management in your PDCS that you will have to think about(managing Feedback for example).

As a first point, we should get attendants’ attention and motivation for our PDC meeting to enhance continuity. We can warm them up to study together by turning lights on/off, counting up or down, using some signalling such gestures or knocking on somewhere. Here, continuing the motivation and attention is also vital; so we can give resposilities for groups or individuals. We can give the attendants chance to nominate each other in order to enhance the flow of share. Also, I really liked the grouping activity which we tried to find correct order as a group, some have runner roles while others writer roles. This will help teachers to complete and decide together and share with each other. I will try to energize and let them enjoy the process as it is really for the sake of their satisfaction in their work, too. ( flight grouping, odd-even numbers, pandas sleeping) These are simple but really effective ways to give motivation and to feel happiness what you are doing.
2) Of course, I am considering that even for adults I have to use simple understandable instruction and repeat them. Also, I can make them repeat what we are going to do. As they are adults, I will try to not to lose their attention in the meetings so try to find different ice breakers and to group effectively to think and share.also, for their reflection I will have to model and make them be willing to tell about.

Yes, I will have some points to care more. I normally do formal assessment especially with my 4th grade students via exams and evaluate them accordingly. I already never use Turkish versions of words or instructions; instead ı try to give examples. From now on, I will add more meaningful activities such production activities not directly given matching activities. Also, try to use more smileys, stars, stickers or stars. Also, for assessment for learning activities; I will care more to the process rather than the product. I am thinking adding sometimes small feedback activities to evaluate their learning.

1. What do you think will be the greatest benefitof being in a Professional DevelopmentCommunity for the teachers of English in yourlocal context who join your PDC meetings. 2. How do you feel the PDC sessions you havestudied in this face to face training programmewill help you deal with possible problems whenyou are planning and conducting PDCs forteachers in your local context?

English teaching starts at 2nd grade and continues for long years in Turkey. however students can not use language communicatively or even May not understand easily while watching or listening to. Both teachers and students think that English is not learned or used actively despite long academic years of studying language. I think, PDCs will break this taboo ‘ English can not be learned in schools’. Thanks to PDC meetings in their area, teachers will have the chance to find solutions to their possible local problems collaboratively. They learn and implement New ideas to their own classrooms and follow ongoing innovative methods or tools. As the meetings asks for feedback, this will be more realistic and practical project for teachers. Also, they will not feel alone as they Compare and work together. Also, teachers have the chance to appeal in English in these meetings, too.

2. Especially in the last two days, I have been enlightened about how to conduct a PDC meeting and what to do. Because, We have learned the planning stages, their procedure and what to add as materials or activities. As facilitators, at the beginning here I shared similar concerns, but day by dağ We all come to the point that We can do it. We have overcomed our anxiety, as We are in the same place this is more edfective for me to understand the process. Also, I have seen that We will continue sharing and collaborating with other facilitators. Also, We have the chance to appy a plan as facilitators today( friday :)) this will Show me the process too. When We are face to face with our own facilitators, this make me believe that We are doing Really doable things here and have the chance to get help to handle the process. I am happy to be here…
