Luisa has worked in the beauty industry for over a decade now. She began offering nail services from her dorm room in 2009 whilst completing her marketing degree at Nottingham University. It was there that her passion for the industry began to quickly grow. Once she completed her degree she began as a beauty therapist and found her own ‘flavour’ as a beauty therapist blending her passion to deliver excellence in treatment standards and her ‘voice’ in marketing the Beauty industry. She worked her way up to manager of a salon, practise manager of a Doctor-led skin clinic and later area manager of a salon chain.

Much of her role includes managing teams of beauty therapists and overseeing ongoing training and support of new members and existing members of staff. Luisa gained valuable insight into the standard of many beauty therapists and feels truly blessed to be a part of the educational system and prepare new professionals for the ever-growing and rewarding beauty industry.

Something you may not know about Luisa:

She was born into the industry and grew up in salons owned by her mother. She grew up with the culture of nails and women socialising in an environment of relaxation and beauty therapies.

Professional communication includes using polite, respectful language, maintaining confidentiality, and listening actively to the client’s needs. Body language, tone of voice, and appearance should all reflect professionalism. Keeping appointments on time and explaining procedures clearly also builds trust.

⸻

j. Explain health and safety working practices

Follow salon hygiene rules, clean and sterilise equipment, use PPE (gloves, mask, goggles), patch-test before treatments, and ensure the environment is safe (e.g., no tripping hazards). Comply with health and safety laws and COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations.

⸻

k. Explain the importance of positioning yourself and the client correctly

Correct positioning prevents strain and injury for the therapist and ensures client comfort. It allows for accurate treatment application and helps maintain professional boundaries. Proper posture and ergonomic setup also improve efficiency and results.

⸻

l. Explain the importance of using correct products, tools, and techniques

Choosing the right tools, settings, and products ensures safe and effective results tailored to the client’s skin type and condition. It reduces the risk of adverse reactions and maximises the benefits of the treatment.

⸻

m. Explain how to work on different treatment areas

Each area of the body has different skin thickness, sensitivity, and hair density. Adjust laser settings accordingly—for example, lower intensity on the face and higher on legs. Follow manufacturer guidelines and client consultation notes.

⸻

n. Explain the consequences of inaccurate identification of skin type (Fitzpatrick scale)

Incorrect classification can lead to burns, hyperpigmentation, or ineffective treatment. Darker skin types require lower settings due to higher melanin levels. Using the wrong settings increases the risk of skin damage.

⸻

o. Describe how treatments can be adapted to suit client needs

Adapt settings based on skin type, condition, sensitivity, and client comfort. Use cooling methods for sensitive skin or avoid certain areas if contraindications exist. Adjust the frequency and intensity of treatments to suit the individual.

⸻

p. Explain contra-actions that may occur during or after treatment

Common reactions include redness, swelling, itching, and a warm sensation. Less common ones are blistering or pigmentation changes. These must be monitored and managed with proper aftercare advice.

⸻

q. Explain methods of evaluating treatment effectiveness

Take before-and-after photos, conduct follow-up consultations, and ask for client feedback. Monitor the skin’s appearance, texture, and client satisfaction. Record results in treatment notes.

⸻

r. Summarise aftercare advice to prevent post-treatment damage

	•	Avoid sun exposure and use SPF 30+.

	•	Don’t use harsh skincare or exfoliants.

	•	Keep skin cool and moisturised.

	•	Avoid hot baths, saunas, and swimming for 24–48 hours.

	•	Follow any personalised instructions given by the therapist.

⸻

s. Explain how to deal with the reappearance of skin conditions

Book regular maintenance treatments. Adjust the technique or use combined therapies (e.g., LED + laser). Offer homecare products and educate the client on skincare routines to manage flare-ups between sessions.

⸻

t. Explain effects and benefits of laser or IPL on skin and tissues

	•	Stimulates collagen and elastin production.

	•	Reduces fine lines, acne scars, pigmentation, and redness.

	•	Improves skin texture and tone.

	•	Destroys hair follicles (for hair removal) or targets pigment/vessels.

	•	Can help with vascular conditions or rosacea.

⸻

u. Explain different skin types, conditions, diseases, and disorders

Skin types: normal, oily, dry, combination, sensitive.

Conditions: dehydration, sensitivity, pigmentation, acne, ageing.

Diseases/Disorders: eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, fungal infections—must be identified and sometimes referred to a specialist before treatment.

⸻

v. Explain the structure and function of the skin

Three main layers:

	•	Epidermis: protective outer layer, regenerates cells.

	•	Dermis: contains collagen, elastin, blood vessels, nerves.

	•	Hypodermis: fat layer for insulation and cushioning.

Functions include protection, temperature regulation, sensation, and excretion.

⸻

w. Explain principles of skin healing

After treatment, the skin initiates a healing response. Fibroblasts produce new collagen, and inflammation reduces over time. Healing speed depends on age, health, and treatment depth.

⸻

x. Explain effects of ageing, lifestyle, and environment on skin

	•	Ageing: slows down collagen production and cell turnover.

	•	Lifestyle: smoking, poor diet, stress affect skin health.

	•	Environment: UV rays cause premature ageing, pollution clogs pores.

⸻

y. Explain structure/function of the endocrine system & skin

Hormones (e.g., estrogen, testosterone) regulate oil production, skin thickness, and healing. Hormonal imbalances can cause acne, pigmentation, or dryness.

⸻

z. Explain structure/function of circulatory and lymphatic systems

	•	Circulatory: delivers oxygen/nutrients, removes waste—essential for skin regeneration.

	•	Lymphatic: drains toxins, supports immune system, helps reduce puffiness and swelling.
