         <description><![CDATA[<div>1189-1192<br>Attempt by some leaders of Western Christian states to re-conquer the Holy Land following the capture of Jerusalem by the Ayyubid Sultan, Saladin.<br>This is important because the Third Crusade shows the beginnings of a Latin re-conquest and a Western pathway into the Holy Land.  Also,  the Siege of Acre could be considered a turning point for the Crusaders in defeating Saladin.<br><br></div>]]></description>

Each side drew many allies into the war. It was one of the most notable conflicts of the Middle Ages, in which five generations of kings from two rival dynasties fought for the throne of the largest kingdom in Western Europe.<br>This is significant because the war marked both the height of chivalry and its subsequent decline, and the development of strong national identities in both countries.  Also, the result was the French and its allies so France got to retain the House of Valois.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Around 800-1066<br>The word Viking actually means "to raid" in Old Norse. The Vikings would board their long ships and head across the waters to raid villages on the northern coast of Europe, including islands such as Great Britain and Scotland.<br><br>This is significant because the Vikings began to settle in lands outside of Scandinavia. In the 9th century they settled portions of Great Britain, Scotland, Germany, and Iceland. In the 10th century they moved into northeastern Europe including Russia. They also settled along the coast of northern France, where they established Normandy, which means "northmen" and were able to expand their culture with taking over these lands.<br><br></div>]]></description>
