5th-High level of engagement and depth of knowledge--this transferred into their vocabulary in writing. Another success was building a lot of arts integration strategies in and we look forward to increasing them next year.

Unit 1-5 senses needs supplementing especially with the texts. The writing in the first 2 modules are not developmentally appropriate since students are just learning their letters.

IS A MUST. We do need to talk about which grade level is doing which book. There are suggestions so kids don't have to do the same text every year.

5th-Time. Both planning and teaching. For planning, we look forward to diving into assessment and feedback next year because this year we spent all of our time focused on what we were teaching. For teaching, we were not able to get to a lot of the writing because each lesson was pretty substantial (we typically taught through around lesson 22--second arc in each unit).

Getting to the deep dives (being able to complete the whole lesson). There's not reasonable expectations of what students can complete within the given time. For example, 20 minutes to write an essay. Getting through the modules in time is hard. Have had to condense every module at the end.

Module 0 was helpful in teaching routines and easing in. It may be helpful to use one of the alternative texts next year so kids aren't repeating the same thing. (2nd)

Pages numbers are missing in some books on the dang pages! Uuugh!

5th-We set structures for the reading block--we feel like we could do this during module 1 and not do module 0. However, the one piece we would still want to build into the beginning of module 1 is reading art and symbols work (which we used almost daily throughout the rest of the unit).

We were fully able to teach module 3 and 4 in writing. We used the writing structure but we added to it with our knowledge of writing.

Non-Fiction Writing

Non-fiction writing is very strong. Opinion, Essay, but we are missing Creative and Fiction writing.

5th-Module 2 was easier to condense--module 1 and 3 harder. We would love to just focus on 1-3 so that we get to more writing.

Easiest to condense: Module 2 because we moved one of the focusing questions/texts to social studies

Module 1 because the writing is done whole group and we can integrate science to increase the time (2nd)

Trying to get to all the components is a challenge. Plus, some of the reading comprehension components are not developmentally appropriate especially for beginning of the year with the diversity of learner we have and exposure to text being different.

Hardest to condense: Module 3 because it is a brand new writing concept and is the only time they do it in 2nd grade.

Idea for next year: Integrate journaling/personal narrative writing throughout the year so kids have more experience before we get to Module 3.

Students have grown in their writing skills, background knowledge of topics, grammar and writing skills through the deep dives and better understanding of vocabulary

5th-We need to finish the modules so that we get to the more complex writing. We also need to build in more quick plan, quick paragraph writing to prep kids for the timed writing of CMAS

Module 0 seemed like it could be taken out and start module 1 earlier.

The modules were easy to condense but left hard choices, for example, do we do the final writing assessment or read Love That Dog.

CKLA has a little bit of writing, especially to teach sentence structure and parts of speech. (2nd)

We enjoyed the painted essay, it is a great structure for an essay. The recursive nature helps students understand. Another challenge with teaching deep dives was applying them to writing. There were times when we had to make hard decisions. Would it benefit to use mod 0 to teach more about the structures and process of writing.
