This was the turning point for the Soviets, as they were able to hold off against German forces. This battle lasted for almost 6 years and was the longest battle in WW2. This war was about naval power and who would control the waters in the Atlantic. The Allies and the Axis powers were fighting for the same things essentially, which were expanding their power and influence over the Atlantic trade and travel routes. This battle is obviously significant in the sense that it challenged who had the most power and influence over the Atlantic and waters surrounding Europe. They fought over the territorial claims of these North African claims, and over the oil reserves and goods contained in this strategic location. This was significant because whoever controlled these lands were able to control minerals and oil for the war- which machinery at the time relied on. They would also be able to control the trade routes and the Suez Canal.
