1. Increase in Labour Force

Migrants are more likely to be of working age – such as, students, and those looking for jobs. They may bring dependants, but generally net immigration leads to an increase in the labour force and increases the potential output capacity of the economy.

2. Increase in aggregate demand and Real GDP

Net inflows of people also lead to an increase in aggregate demand. Migrants will increase the total spending within the economy. As well as increasing the supply of labour, there will be an increase in the demand for labour – relating to the increased spending within the economy. Ceteris paribus, net migration should lead to an increase in real GDP. The impact on real GDP per capita is less certain.

Australia's immigration policies have had a dramatic effect on school populations, especially in the state of New South Wales which receives about 40 percent of the intake. This article is based on a study that was carried out for the Bureau of Immigration, Multicultural and Population Research and the NSW Ministry of Education. The study revealed that many non-English-speaking background pupils miss out on English as a second language instruction, community languages are allowed to lapse, and aspects ofthe school environment, such as relations between different groups, are not given the attention that they deserve.

As one of the major immigrant-receiving countries in the world, Australia has a history, especially in the last 50 years, which is unique. The nature of immigration policies has been constantly changing in response to changing national and international circumstances. One of the most significant changes in the last two decades, but especially since the 1980s, has been the changing ethnic composition of immigration. The abandonment in the 1960s of the White Australia Policy which barred non-European settlers has led to the arrival of large numbers of people from many different countries.

In recent years, Australia's immigration policy also has come to be seen more closely as part of economic policy, and changes have been implemented in order to align immigration with current economic circumstances Uupp, 1993:245). Hence, since 1980 more highly skilled migrants have been sought, irrespective of their country of origin, to meet the needs of an economy which is undergoing major restructuring. Of these immigrants, an increasing number comes from Asia.

Along with changes in immigration policies have come changes in settlement policies. In the 1950s and 1960s, many immigrants found considerable barriers to their full participation in Australian society, particularly since they were expected to assimilate into an Anglo-Australian way of life, even if it meant breaking with their cultural traditions. The movement in the 1970s towards a policy ofmulticulturalism, backed by national policy initiatives, signaled an official repudiation of assimilationism and a century ofdiscrimination (Jupp, 1991:101). Since the 1970s, concepts of "participation" and "access and equity" have become prominent in relation to immigrants, especially those from non-English-speaking countries. Policies to address these issues have been introduced at both the national level (by the Commonwealth government) and at the state level (by state or territory governments).
http://search.proquest.com/docview/215277003/D06D7B0DF42E40A9PQ/5?accountid=130654#center
