In Refugee, a historical fiction novel by Alan Gratz, three different children and their families seek refuge in three different time lines. Isabel, living in the 1950s, is an eleven year old girl from Cuba seeks a new home in Miami. Mahmoud who lives in 2015, lives in a hostile city in Syria seeks refuge to Germany. Josef and his family are Jews living in the time of the Nazis and they are trying to get to Cuba. Everyone made it safely besides Josef and his family who were caught in France. Josef's little sister was the only survivor, and in 2015 she was the one that offered housing to Mahmoud and his family.

Josef grew up in Germany. Everything started to change very quickly as soon as the Nazis took his father to a concentration camp. The Nazis offered Josef, his mother, and younger sister Rosie a deal- they would get their father back if they boarded a ship and left in two weeks. Of course they said yes. They boarded the St.Louis as a whole family once again. Yet, things were different than they used to be. Josef's father had an insane amount of paranoia. He never once left the cabin, except for the funeral of someone on board the ship. After a while on the ship, they finally arrived at the Cuban harbor. They were told they could not dock that day. Josef's dad was convinced that this meant they had to turn around, which it did. Josef's father proceeded to jump overboard and was taken to a Cuban hospital. The ship had to leave without him. Josef, his mother, and Rosie now had to go to France. They lived there happily for two years until they were found yet again. The Nazis took Josef and his mother and left Rosie in exchange for diamonds. Rosie then grew up to help Mahmoud and his family because she knew what it was like to have no where to go.

Mahmoud lived in Syria, a country torn apart by war. One day, his apartment was bombed. This is when his family realized that they really needed to go somewhere safe. They hopped in the car and started driving. Along the way, they ended up on some islands and in a detainment center in Hungary. Mahmoud was the one that got his family out of the detainment center by leading a walk out. After their escape, they started their walk to Germany. When they arrived, people threw them food and drinks. Mahmoud and his family then started to look for the couple that was housing them. When they found the elderly couple, Mahmoud found out that the lady's name was Rosie. Rosie was Josef's little sister. Rosie told Mahmoud that she housed refugees because she knew how hard it was to feel like you have no one and nowhere to go.

Isabel grew up in Cuba. She was eleven years old when it was decided that they had to leave. If they didn't, her father would be sent to prison and most likely never be seen again. They set sail on a tiny motorboat made by her neighbor and best friend. They were set off course and ended up in the Bahamas. They were not allowed to set foot on land, so tourists threw food, water, and Advil to them. Once they set sail again, the boat started to sink because there was too much weight. That meant that two people at a time would hang on to the sides of the boat and get pulled along. It was Isabel's turn, and she went with her best friend Ivan. They were having fun and talking until Ivan was attacked by a shark. Ivan died a few minutes later. He never got to see Miami, where they arrived the next day. After almost being caught by the Coast Guard, Isabel and her family made it safely to Miami and lived there happily.

I thought that this book was very well written. There were many twists and turns throughout the novel. It was interesting to read through three different character's perspectives. One of the most sad scenes in this book was when Iván was attacked by a shark. He never got to know what life was like in America. Another sad scene was when Mahmoud's parents had to give their baby, Hannah, to random people to keep her alive when they were stranded in the ocean. The end of the book had a shocking plot twist when Mahmoud and his family went to live with Rosie, Josef's little sister.

This novel connects to the theme of hope in many ways. All of the characters in this book needed to keep their hope in order to make it out of their countries alive. Mahmoud and his parents were always hopeful about reuniting with his younger sister. Josef and his family always stayed hopeful about getting into Cuba and finding his father. Isabel always kept hopeful about making it to America like she had dreamed about.
