King Saul's Kingship 1021 BCE - 1000 BCE

The Jewish people asked for a king so God gave them one. His name was Saul. Saul was a head taller than all of his brothers. Saul was not a wealthy king. He lead the Jewish people to defeat the Amalekites but he didn't do what God told him to. God told Saul not to profit off defeating the Amalekites but Saul didn't listen and took their cattle and gave it to his people. God didn't like this. There was another man named David who God secretly anointed king. David was a leader in their army. Saul saw David's success and was jealous. Saul sent David to the front lines of war so he would die but David didn't and became more popular with the Jewish people. Saul died at 70 years old and was king for about 20 years. This event is significant because Saul was the first king of Israel. The people asked for a king and they got it. God gave them what they asked for. This plays into the Theme of the Jewish people overcoming big problems. The big problem they had was their war with the Amalekites. They were able to defeat them.

King David's Kingship 1002 BCE - 970 BCE

David was secretly anointed king. The people didn't know that David would be king. David fell in love with Saul's daughter and became best friends with Saul's son. David was a leader in war and killed Goliath. He became very popular with the Jewish people which made Saul jealous. Saul sent David to the front lines of war so he would be killed. This plan backfired. Saul survived and became even more popular with the Jewish people. While David was king he saw a woman named Botsheva bathing on top of her house. He ended up sleeping with her and getting her pregnant. He tried to get her husband to come back from war so he could convince him that it was his kid. He did not come back so David sent him to the front lines of war and he was killed. Quickly after that David and Botsheva got married. David had another kid named Solomon. David died at the age of 70. This is significant to the jewish story because it showed the people that even though the king was well liked, he still bad things. This is another story of the jewish people overcoming something bigger than them though. This time physically. David killed Goliath.

King Solomon's Kingship 970 BCE - 931 BCE

When king David died he said that he wanted his second son Solomon to be the next king. David did not want his first son (the one he had with Botsheva) to be king. When Solomon was anointed king he had his older brother put to death and got rid of most of his father's royal staff. God told Solomon that it was time to build the first temple. The temple brought people together. Solomon was known as a very wise king. His laws were very fair. He also shared his wisdom with the people. An example is when one woman lost her child and took another woman's. Both of the women said that it was their child. He took the child and said he would split them in half to see the women's reactions. One woman did not care while the other woman said that she would rather give the child away than have that happen. Solomon ruled for 40 years. This is important because he was the last king that the Jewish people had. This also shows the story of the people overcoming something. This time it was the period of having kings. Even though all of the kings were all good people at some points they Israel wasn't a place that needed a king.

The Southern Kingdom of Judah and the First Temple Destroyed by the Babylonians 586 BCE - 538 BCE

The Babylonians destroyed the first temple. This was the thing that brought both sides of Israel together. After this, they split up back into the tribes. Some of the tribes were conquered and many people were forced to go to the caption of Babylon. Most of the people who were wealthy in the tribes were taken. This is important to the story because it was when the people really became the Jews instead of the Israelites. This shows the same theme because even though this terrible thing happened, the Jewish people were able to recover from this and come back together, even if some of them were lost.
