Citizens can help decrease the number of food insecure families by partaking in organisations like The Food Bank. To be food insecure is to not have enough money to fund for you and your families 3 daily meals. Though Singapore was ranked the world’s most food-secure in 2019, 1 in 10 Singaporeans still encounter this problem, at least once every 12 months. To combat this issue, citizen-initiated beneficiaries such as The Food Bank, Willing Hearts and Food from the Heart, aim to provide these less fortunate families with a parcel of free, fresh and nutritious food for them to consume.

Involvement in volunteerism or other social movements. This results in a greater sense of belonging in society, less social-related issues, e.g less environmental pollution. Leads to stability and the wish to support country in greater efforts. Environment organisations like Zero Waste SG, a Singaporean non-government organisation that focuses on multiple fronts of tackling environmental issues. They also utilise multiple methods to help save the environment, including influencing the government to make decisions to help improve the environment. We as citizens can help support this through a myriad of methods including donations, volunteering, or sponsoring them. Ultimately these acts cater and contribute to the society as they are giving back to the government.

Citizens should stop littering at beaches, lakes, reservoirs, canals and other water bodies to prevent water contamination. We can also dispose of toxic chemicals properly to prevent toxic chemicals from ending up in water bodies and polluting water. If we continue to not do anything about water pollution, our waters will be very polluted and it may endanger underwater animals. Water pollution can damage entire food chains. When people drop their trash in the water, fish and mammals that live in the water could be hurt by them. If a fish or mammal eats a piece of trash, then it could die. Altered water temperatures caused by people can kill all aquatic life in a pond or a lake.

By doing so, the community can be a better place to live in and it would be a more environmentally conducive. It was created to nurture a culture and society that is more civic minded and considerate. Therefore, when citizens volunteer to help clean the community, they are doing their part in keeping Singapore clean and conducive.

For example, ground-up initiatives have sprung up to help foreign workers who have been affected by Singapore’s "circuit breaker" measures that are aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19. COVID Migrant Support Coalition, an informal group consisting of volunteers from Geylang Adventures, ItsRainingRaincoats, Singapore Migrant Friends and Migrant X Me, has been distributing lunch and dinner packs since Tuesday (Apr 7), when the measures were implemented. This act of kindness brought about encouragement and spread understanding, awareness about how hard the migrant worker’s were hit by COVID-19. It also helped migrant workers by providing them with food and necessities. By volunteering their time, efforts and money towards a social cause that they are passionate and concerned about. Their actions benefited many people in the society and inspired many others.

Citizens can volunteer at charities or organizations. One example of an organization is “Food from the Heart”. A good amount of food is wasted everyday but the programme aims to reduce this. One of their programmers is “Food from the Heart's Bread Programme” by collecting bread from various bakeries islandwide and distributing the baked good to the beneficiaries. By volunteering, we can contribute to the society. Most importantly, we can alleviate hunger by providing reliable, consistent and sustainable food support to the less-fortunate through food distribution programmes.

Citizens should try and influence their government’s decisions and policies as they are the ones who serve to benefit the most from influencing the governments decisions. This is because by announcing their wishes and needs to the government, their government can understand and appropriately respond to their needs so the citizens do not feel neglected. For example, REACH Singapore: a consultation platform that collects input from Singaporeans on policy and programmatic issues raised by government agencies, and allows civil servants to publicly respond to feedback from the citizens. REACH also publishes materials on national issues, such as the Singapore Budget and National Day Rally Speeches, in an attempt to be a one-stop information portal for citizens. REACH allows for the government/ civil servants to come up with measures to appease the citizens wishes and desires. This is especially important as if the citizens who wishes are responded to or granted , they may feel valued in the country, resulting in efficiency of passing laws and stability of the country. Therefore, citizens influencing government decisions is important as it m,Akers them feel valued and know that the government is listening and trying to make them country a better place for them to live in.

They want to publish an inaugural Zero Waste Masterplan this year to raise awareness of waste issues in Singapore and articulate the government’s efforts to adopt a circular economy approach to sustainable waste and resource management. Us citizens can then help work towards becoming a zero waste nation by reducing our consumption of materials and energy, reusing and recycling them to give them a second lease of life. By reusing, we can reduce the amount of waste by not disposing the materials that we have but instead use/create them into something new. With all these contributions, we can then ensure a Zero Waste future.

Citizens can influence government decisions so their decisions and policies can benefit the people and fulfil their needs. Citizens can voice their thoughts and opinions to the government through Our Singapore Conversation in 2012. It allows residents and citizens to convey their concerns or ideas about how to improve Singapore to the ministers through dialogue sessions. The government will be able to get a wide spectrum of opinions, ideas, and problems faced by Singaporeans, and they will be able to cater to the needs of Singaporeans better. Thus, citizens are able to influence government decisions by communicating their needs to the government, hence, citizens need to be able to communicate their requests to the government so that the government can implement policies that benefit the people.

Citizens can work for the good of society through volunteering in non-profit organisations where the programmes that these organisations have are areas that these citizens are interested in.Citizens can volunteer at organisations such as Food from the heart which has food distribution programmes such as Project Belanja! and Bread Run which provides the needy with free meals. Food from the heart not only helps to feed the needy in our society but also reduce food wastage as F&B shops usually discard all foods that are left unsold at the end of the day. Volunteers from Bread Run make weekly trips to bakeries and collect the unsold bread which will be sent to places such as nursing and children homes for the elderly and children. Issac and Jin,a Singaporean couple who have been Food from the heart volunteers for 15 years, make the weekly bread runs as a family outing as they want to teach their children to volunteer in future to help others that are in need. Issac and Jin are very happy to see that there are more bakeries contributing their unsold bread to the Bread run which shows that the Bread Run programme is very successful.Whenever Issac and Jin see the smiles of the people at the children and nursing homes, they feel immeasurable joy as they are appreciated for their work.Bread run also sends pastries to poorer families where breakfast is being provided for these families and saves them a few dollars. This can add up to quite a lot of money as assuming that these families eat bread everyday and cost quite a lot in a month. These money can be nspent on household products instead. This shows that citizens are able to help the needy through contributing their time of delivering food to these people and are able to help these people save money on their meals. This helps to cope with the rising cost of living due to the Covid-19 situation and ongoing Russian-Ukraine War which led to the inflation of many household products. Food from the heart helps the poorer families to need not worry as much for their meals as it will be settled by the organisation.

Therefore,Citizens can work for the good of society through volunteering in non-profit organisations such as Food from the heart which helps the needy to scope with the rising cost of living.
