According to the Greek and Roman scholia Tzetzes on Lycophron 650 & Servius on Aeneid 3.420, Scylla was a beautiful sea nymph that Poseidon loved dearly. However, his wife, Amphitrite, was very jealous of her, so when she was bathing, she poisoned her water. This caused her to become the monster she is now. Some other accounts claim that she was being courted by the marine god Glaucus, who loved her dearly. Scylla rejected his love because he was part fish. So he asked Circe to help him get Scylla to love him. "Glaucus loved [Scylla], but Circe, daughter of Sol [Helios the Sun], loved Glaucus. Since Scylla was accustomed to bathe in the sea, Circe, daughter of Sol, out of jealousy poisoned the water with drugs, and when Scylla went down into it, dogs sprang from her thighs, and she was made a monster."
