Irena Sendler, a Catholic social worker who saved approximately 2,500 Jewish children from being killed by the Nazis during the Holocaust, died May 12. She was 98. She was awarded the--CNS Righteous Among the Nations honor by Israel's Yad Vashem in 1965 and Poland's highest honor, the White Eagle, in 2003 for smuggling children from Warsaw's Jewish ghetto to safe homes, orphanages and Catholic convents.

The students wrote a performance, Life in a Jar, about Irena Sendler’s courageous life. They performed for numerous clubs, religious organizations and civic groups in their community, around the state of Kansas, all over the U.S. and in Europe (345 presentations as of January 2015). As the project developed, the students began to search for Irena’s grave in Poland and discovered, to their complete surprise, that Irena was still alive and living in Warsaw, in obscurity. They began exchanging letters with the elderly woman. In one of Irena’s first letters to the girls, she wrote:

"My emotion is being shadowed by the fact that no one from the circle of my faithful coworkers, who constantly risked their lives, could live long enough to enjoy all the honors that now are falling upon me…. I can’t find the words to thank you, my dear girls…. <- Irena was an only child, but she had a son and a daughter. Her daughter, Janka,still lives in Warsaw, Poland, and her son Adam passed away in 1999 (interestingly enough, the day the Life in a Jar project started on September 23rd). Adam’s daughter, Irena’s granddaughter Agniesa, is the same age as the girls who started the Life in a Jar project.
