What are GMOs?

GMOs, or genetically modified organisms, are usually genetically modified food. The food is modified for two main reasons: it's being more cost-effective, and it can produce more food. Currently, food producers are not required by the Federal Government to label GMO foods as GMO, but many are pushing for that to be a requirement. Since 1996 humans have been consuming GMOs and the FDA approves of their consumption.

Perhaps the biggest debate about GMOs is their effect on a person's health. The IRT (Institute of Responsible Technology), states: "Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with genetically modified (GM) food (AAEM 2009), including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, faulty insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system. The AAEM has asked physicians to advise all patients to avoid GM foods." Many others, like the National Academy of Sciences, state that, "No study has shown negative effects in humans caused by GMOs". The counter argument to this is that there might not have been enough time for these studies to show long-term effects. The more present health risk is when foods are modified to be resistant to pesticides. This can lead to pesticide consumption, but that is very rare. Per Harvard University, pesticides are already used by people a lot, sometimes even on their skin, so as long as it a low amount, you will be fine.

Per the Science Post, the University of California or Los Angeles did a study into this, with quite shocking results. They blindfolded all 35 participants, and had them try two different versions of 6 foods. All 35 participants preferred the GMO foods over the organic, natural food. 27 of the study participants actually felt sick after eating the organic foods, and thought they were disgusting.

Who regulates GMOs?

The use of GMOs (to an extent) is approved by the FDA. However, many say it is the same companies who have put unsafe chemicals into food are the same people regulating GMOs. There can't really be a basis for regulating them yet, as they haven't shown any negative effects in humans. The loose-regulation is often criticized nationally and internationally.

In conclusion, we don't really know if GMOs are bad for us yet. In small studies some animals and negative effects, but this doesn't prove anything toward human use. The real danger is the pesticides sprayed on them, which can be harmful to humans. As of now, GMOs are efficient and safe, so until that changes, their use is helpful.
