One of the most important things to understand when looking at curriculum, assessment and instruction is to make sure that they all align. We need to think differently about the order that we plan and start with the standard and then the assessment before we look at the instructional strategies we will use when teaching the unit. During each of the phases of designing a unit we need to make sure that they align and help our students meet the standard and our end goal.

The most important thing in understanding the connection between curriculum, assessment, and instruction is making sure that they all align with each other. A lot of the time, teachers start with the last step, planning of instruction... teachers need to start understanding that the order is imperative. Designing the curriculum (standards, goals, outcomes) comes first, then planning and creating valid and reliable assessments, and finally planning instructional strategies that engage all students, account for differentiation, and provide success for assessments. When planning for all three, assessment must align and measure the goals or objectives in the design step and the instruction must align with both the design and assessment steps.

When developing lesson plans it's important to understand that the end goal is what really matters. Therefor, it's necessary to create cohesion between curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Each area needs to lead to better understanding in a way that creates meaning and transferability. All areas should reinforce the end goal effectively.

In understanding the connection between curriculum, assessment and instruction, the most important factor is to ensure that they are carried out in the correct order. This is useful in order to align instruction with both curriculum, and assessment. Failing to consider the curriculum prior to assessment will mean that one cannot really measure goals effectively as this needs to be identified first, in the curriculum design process. Also having assessment prior to instruction will make the instruction more purposeful.

The connection between curriculum, assessment and instruction is knowing the what and then being able to plan the how. I too have found myself swamped and overwhelmed with all of the demands of my job, especially during the first year at a school. I have been the teacher who tries to survive day to day while doing my best to unpack and prioritize the heavy amount of curriculum I am faced with. I have developed a great distaste for writing lesson plans because I prefer to look at the main goals for the week or unit, etc., and then let things play around in my mind and monitor how my kids are doing day to day. I find that when I write lesson plans too far in advance, I end up changing them or skipping parts due to time constraints and then I'm back to square one. I had never thought before about this 1-2-3 process of planning curriculum, assessment and then finally instruction. For me it's all about time - make sure to allow enough time for each step!

Day to day it is so easy to fall into the trap of what do I need to get done today and then plan accordingly. It is so much more effective when we have a plan in place that first asks us where do we want to get to by the end. Example being what do we want students to learn. How are they going to be assessed. Finally how am I going to teach this. I find that units that I do a better job with this focus tend to go so much better. I would also admit that I am way more effective at this at the beginning of the year/semester. Need to be better at sustaining the effort throughout the time I am with my students.
