At that point of time Solomon was busy with trying to rush a paper out about the recent Pearl Harbor bombing, even though he was extremely pressed for time he still helped Cassie and the rest with their car, Moe's ticket to Chicago. Solomon nodded. "Well, don't know what your situation is back in Jackson, but it seems to me that you shouldn't be staying away too long from there, especially with this war breaking out. There'll be questions asked."
Solomon only knew that Cassie and the rest were only contacting them but he wasn't aware of the trouble that Moe was in and the things that Moe did. At that point of time, anyone would've withdrawn themselves from the situation and not help them as helping Moe and the rest might result in getting in trouble themselves but instead of doing so,  he seemed to be in deep in thought. It's as if he was thinking of ways to process the situation and salvage it. This shows that Solomon is a responsible person. Even though he did agree to help Cassie and the rest but after knowing their dire situation he didnt back out but still thought of how to help them.

Solomon looked after him in silence, then turned to me and spoke softly. "Just what happened out on the road, Cassie?"
Solomon spoke to Cassie in a soft and comforting way despite the fact that Cassie had just lashed out at him even though he did nothing to get such a treatment from Cassie. Instead of berating Cassie or getting mad at her, Solomon seemed to be more comforting and tried to reach out a helping hand to listen to Cassie. Still holding me by one shoulder, he lifted my chin with the flat of his hand so that I had to look him straight in the eyes again; his gaze was intense.
Solomon wanted to go close to Cassie to comfort her just after she finished ranting and spilling out her feelings about the hardships she had to go through on the way to Memphis. However, Cassie rejected Solomon’s care. She didn’t want Solomon to go close to her. Despite that, Solomon did not listen to her instead he affirmatively reached out to her, as if telling her it’s okay and that she does not need to be so defensive and protective of herself as he would not hurt her. The way Solomon approached her was firm yet assuring especially the way he made Cassie look him in the eye. At first he held some distance from him, his eyes smiling into mine, then he pulled me closer, and I could feel his heart beating. I knew he could feel mine.
Ever since Cassie met Solomon, she felt attracted to him. When given the chance to be alone with him, she didn’t try to hide her feelings for Solomon anymore.
