I went to the Dominican Republic and was able to explore the food, music and actual neighborhoods surrounding Punta Cana. I was shocked to see that many of the locals had skin resembling mine; however, those with lighter skin typically worked on the resort. Many of my relationships are with people who are from the same racial background as myself.

My love for the language was fostered at a young age by my aunt who used to count and sing songs to me in Swahili. I was afforded the opportunity to formally learn the language through my undergraduate career. My dream is to utilize my skill of speaking Swahili for travel to Kenya.

In the past, finances have impeded upon my opportunities to further my education. I attended an HBCU for undergrad and was completely appalled at the lack of scholarships afforded to me. I worked two jobs as a full-time undergraduate student, which often conflicted with my study time for school work. I noticed discrepancies between myself and some of the white students attending my HBCU. Many of them attended my alma mater on full scholarships from the athletic department. It angered me that I had to work two jobs to be able to afford my education and was still expected to achieved academically at a level of excellence (at a school that was designed for me), while some of my white counterparts did not have the financial burden and were most likely able to give their full attention to their education.

The schools I attended offered SAT test prep, tutoring, AP courses, and social justice small learning communities, Model UN, etc. However, some of my cousins and close friends who attended schools in other districts did not have the same educational experiences.
