FlipGrid (Jessica Bennett)

Flipgrid is a video discussion platform that is free and makes learning fun. It only takes a few minutes to start meaningful discussions with all of your students. Many teachers create discussion questions for their students and in turn have them respond to it along with a response to a classmate's response. Now there is a way to make this process much more engaging and much less painful! Students will actually want to record a response and listen to others. All they have to do is simply talk! Recording yourself talking is such a more efficient way to communicate. You can pick up on demeanor, body language, and tone. It is so much easier to say all that you want to say without having to condense and type all of your thoughts out. To start the flipgrid, the teacher or whoever is starting the discussion, just has to make a group. You can name your Group like “Classroom 101” or “Ms Bennett's Classroom”. Then you just have to set your permissions, or how learners will join your Group. You can enter your school’s email domain, connect Google Classroom, or add specific students by their email addresses. Now that your Group is created, you invite people by sharing the group. Simply select, share and copy the link. You can share your Group link anywhere, like email, Microsoft Teams or Google Classroom. You can even share it as a QR code for learners to scan! Lastly, you create topics for your students to respond to and you are ready to go! You can post your own text or video prompt to your learners, or choose from the ready-to-go Topics in the Discovery Library. Once you set a topic, your students can respond with fun, short videos using the camera. The flipgrid camera is packed with tons of creative tools like immersive lenses, fun backdrops, GIFs and more. When focusing on ELA and communication skills this is a super effective and efficient app. It is available for free on all devices and is super user friendly. Flipgrid is also super awesome for our learners that struggle with reading and writing. This app makes it so all learners can be fully engaged and participate with nothing holding them back. They can simply listen to their classmates talk, instead of struggling to read their responses. And they can record their response instead of having to write or type one too! One con of flipgrid is that it has social media style features that makes flipgrid fun but, these features can also distract students from the purpose of the assignment. It is also a form of social media and with the students interacting on it there is also the potential that the students can accidentally interact with untrusted users and profile information can be shared. Another con is that if you do not upload your video it will delete and disappear. It also does not automatically save when recorded or posted. This could be disappointing if you need to start over after recording a response just right. In the end I agree that this app meets all four teaching and learning potential criteria originally proposed by the ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) for evaluating educational software in my opinion. I believe that the Content, technical quality, instructional design, and assessment are all satisfactory throughout this app.

Jamboard (alexis scott)

When looking at the criteria for evaluating educational software Jamboard does a wonderful job of fulfilling the four criteria fairly well. Jamboard in my opinion is more interactive and can be more educational than Kahoot, but they both have the same principle. Students are able to access their own individual pages on their screens with the rest of the class. What I specifically like about Jamboard is it brings collaboration with any topic that a teacher wants to touch on without singling anyone out. Sometimes it is hard for students to want to voice their opinion if they feel they will be judged. Jamboard also for an entire lesson to continue and discussions to form without any single student knowing what another said unless that student decides to share. The technical quality of Jamboard is on the higher end in my opinion. Students and teachers can access this site on any device that can pull up safari, so not just computers. Pictures, word art, and animation can also be inserted where in some other apps similar only the person who creates the page or game can add things into the shared document. When it comes to instructional design teachers and even students can add and edit as they go. Anything goes for the most part when it comes to Jamboard and the amount of academics you want to bring into it. Teachers can use it as a way to just check in with students or do test reviews before a big exam. There are many apps that are starting to surface that all have similar concepts. But in my opinion, Jamboard is not only the easiest to navigate but allows teachers and students to do a large number of things right at their fingertips. I know I have read somewhere in a book about the five C's of Education, which are communication, creativity, collaboration, curation, and critical thinking. Jamboard hits all five of those perfectly. The teacher has full availability to use it as a tool for any subject and i think that is what makes it so special.

This site allows for teachers to make their own games or they can just type in a topic and previously made ones can be played.

Nearpod is a very interactive and user-friendly web-based platform that allows teachers to give interactive lessons, quizzes, and virtual reality-based activities to their students. What is easy about this app is that it does not require a log-in by students or any personal information. Students are just required to enter a 5-digit pin that is unique to the teacher’s presentation. Nearpod can be accessed online or in app form. To focus on the subject science, this tech tool is amazing for it! Teachers can upload educational videos for students to watch that can pause throughout the video and prompt a student to answer a question about the video. Teachers can also upload 3-D diagrams of cells, a human skeleton, etc. that students can interact with. Though the technical quality is high, this platform does take some time to learn and understand all the features. However, once a teacher has a grasp on how to use this platform, it produces great results. The site provides real-time results and reports to monitor student progress and allows teachers to see where they can modify instruction. Additionally, Nearpod says educators using their platform should be aware that some of the features they use on the site could be defined as educational records under FERPA—Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. One safety concern for students is that users can interact with untrusted users and/or students, as is possible for any web-based platform. The security with Nearpod however is strong and it is usually not a major concern amongst students.

Khan Academy: To join a class on Khan Academy, students are given a class code. When students log in, their homepage consists of the content they are working on. Students can see the progress they have made on their goals for an activity/assignment under the “My course mastery” tab. Under the “Assignments” tab, students can directly go to assignments given by the teacher. There is also a tab called “My progress” where students can see their activity log. This same report is also available to the teacher. On this website, students can earn “energy” points and “badges” for their work. This website is great for allowing students to work at their own pace and courses are considered complete when a student reaches course mastery of 90% of more. The courses students are taking and the units/lessons and activities/assignments within can be found when students click on their mastery goal. When a student is brought to a unit page, they have the option to choose what they want to work on first. This website offers educational videos for students to watch, quizzes/assessments, practice unit tests, course challenges. As students work through the content, Khan Academy assess their skill level giving them a designation of attempted, familiar, proficient, or mastered and these levels show up in the teacher progress reports. This website also allows teachers to assign homework through it and see the status of assignments as completed or not completed. Additionally, when students are working on exercises, there is the option to “take a hint” and watch a video to help them through the problem. https://www.khanacademy.org

Teachers using this website have access to simulation-specific tips and video primers, resources for teaching with simulations and activities that have been shared by other teachers. An example of a simulation is in chemistry where students simulate and carry out an experiment with mixing chemicals by clicking and dragging objects on the screen. This is a great website to use in the classroom but even better for asynchronous courses because it is still hands-on and engaging. On this website, there is a section about accessibility features such as alternative input (keyboard navigation), sound and sonification, interactive description, voicing, and more! Additionally, there are simulations with accessibility features that include how to use some the features just listed. https://phet.colorado.edu

Visible Body is an interactive 3D website that brings anatomy right to your fingertips. This site can be used for younger and older students. It can especially benefit those older students in the medical field who need premade flashcards and interactive study sites. This brings the parts of our bodies we can't see right to our eyes. Teachers can use this platform to explain certain topics, create quizzes and even conduct virtual simulations.
