First-Year Teacher

A close family member and friend of mine is a first year teacher at a rural school. He teaches 8th grade, 11th grade, and 12th grade English courses. When I asked him if school counselors were counselors or educators, he said counselors. He kind of laughed and added that it's in the job title. Then, he went on to say that they are needed in the role of counselor because schools already have educators who, when doing doing their jobs well, cover students' needed bases for education. He described a trust between teachers and counselors as they worked together. He also mentioned that school counselors have so much on their plate as they help students with outside-of-school problems that it needs to be their main focus - to help students with their mental and emotional problems apart from education.

Another close friend of mine is a reading intervention specialist for a K-12 disabilities learning center. She spoke to this question with an answer of both. She described a school counselor she would like to work with as covering the problems in students' lives that teachers do not have time to cover. She stated, "school counselors educate from a counseling perspective." She said that she wants a school counselor who works to educate all her students about their social and personal life issues.

Parent & Teacher

Finally, I spoke with a friend who is not only a history teacher, but also a mother of four children who are actively involved in a public school in our area. She has a daughter who is in high school and two sons who are in middle and elementary school. She specifically pointed out that her experience as a parent has shaped her perspective of schools and faculty roles, like that of school counselors. She expressed a desire for a school counselor to help best equip her children in the areas of life she hasn't done so well or can't do so well as a parent. She described this as mostly the role of educator. She said she would want her kids to have the opportunity for individual counseling with the school counselor if they needed it, but she really wants school counselors to teach all students about the subjects from personal life they might not understand otherwise. She mentioned examples of these personal subjects like hygiene, bullying, self-image, relationships, respect, career choices, etc.

This article seeks to discover how school counselors see their role, as well as compare that perception to implementing the American School Counselor Association's (ASCA) National Model. The study found that most of the school counselors who participated desire to fulfill the role described in the ASCA's National Model, specifically the basis of helping advance students' success in the three domains of academics, career development, and social/emotional. This fits the role of educator as they desire to specifically reach all of their students in these domains through teaching them. The article included that the social/emotional domain does need to include some individual counseling, but it is not the main role the counselors desired or felt was most needed for student success (Vaughn, et. al., 2007).

Reference:
Vaughn, L., Bynum, R., & Hooten, M.
