Tiny plastic pieces are killing a bacteria called Prochlorococcus in the oceans, and this bacteria produces oxygen. This means we are further limiting our oxygen by polluting plastic.

CCA

This CCA forced me to learn more about a wide variety of things I already knew somewhat about. I focused on the the ocean, veganism/vegetarianism, global warming, energy, and water. Naturally, we learned a lot about most of the subjects but what peaked my interest the most were the articles relating to veganism and vegetarianism, as these are diets that I have considered for months but have been unable to motivate myself to fully commit to it. After reading these articles, however, I see that this is not only a sustainable option for me, but for everyone, especially in the near future with new technology upcoming to create creative ways to get necessary nutrients.

One of the last articles I read was one from marketwatch.com, and it particularly sparked my interest because the title read “The No.1 reason you should become vegan- it’s not about your health”. While I do care for the feeling of animals and the treatment of them in the horrible industrial farms, I mostly was considering switching to save the environment from these methane producing industrial meat factories. While I often hear reasons centered around the animals, it was refreshing to read one including its effects on earth.

This article, found at https://www.marketwatch.com/story/the-no-1-reason-you-should-become-a-vegan-2019-05-06, invited readers to see not only how easy but how vital a lifestyle without meat is. While citing statistics and figures that we learned about it in class, it also targeted something that has been hindering my ability to commit to the lifestyles: money. Yet this article cited a study that claimed the opposite of my fears; “A study published in the Journal of Hunger and Environmental Nutrition in 2015 revealed that a plant-based diet could save you about $750 a year.” The article also rattled off figures that supported positive effects of the diet (even a person anecdote of weight loss), the negative effects on the environment, and saves you money. Overall, this article was amazing in convincing me to once again try veganism and vegetarianism.

Lastly, another article that peaked my interest was that of some new meat alternatives being introduced in the future. Finding protein alternatives has been a heavy task when researching more about the vegan diets, but with this new technology people will have it way easier. The first new idea they introduced was jellyfish, which are high in nutrients and low in calories, an easy dieting option, and contain a lot of protein. They only take 2 days to turn into chips, and would present a tasty alternative to regular chips, but with nutrients! They also talked about people being able to ‘grow’ there own meat at home, similar to how people brew beer. This would be even easier to do at home, since the product of sustenance literally grows in your home. Scientists even claim that by 2169, people will have microbes to gauge what foods people need, equipped with ‘food patches’ to help with any missing nutrients. Lastly, they present the idea of Space Farm, where astronauts will be able to grow food on other planets for us here on earth. More information can be found at

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/britons-jellyfish-chips-cricket-burgers-future-of-food-report-a/,v.4142451.html .

While the inventions of the second article are in the far future (or so it seems), these articles presented outstanding evidence that the correct lifestyle choice is a conversion to veganism/ vegetarianism, on top of other varying subjects such as rising ocean temperatures, Trump’s opinion on his environmental laws, and Flint, Michigan's water crisis. However the article about diets hit home and I will certainly be giving a meat free diet another go.
