Marshall Plan 1947

Cause- The Marshall Plan was where the U.S. provided economic support and helped rebuild Western European nations. Preventing the spread of communism.

La Violencia, Columbia 1948

Effect- 10 year civil war held in Columbia. This revolution was mainly fought in the countryside of Columbia. "La Violencia" was the name of this revolution. Fought with two different parties, one was the Conservative party and the other was the Liberal Party.

Israel established 1948

People’s Republic of China formed 1949

Armas stages coup to control Guatemala, 1954

Warsaw Pact, 1955

Connection- I can connect this event to learning about Rosa Parks and what she did. We learned what she did and how this was a landmark event in History.

February 1960 Sit-in protest - movement begins at Woolworth's lunch counter in Greensboro, N.C. and spreads to the nation.

Cause- By the end of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, this spread to Greensboro, NC. 4 African American college students staged a sit-in at a white's only lunch table. TV crews got beatings, violence, and food being dumped on students all on their cameras.

April 3 - May 10 1963 - Police arrest Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other ministers demonstrating in Birmingham Alabama and then turn fire hoses and police dogs on the marchers

Cause- MLK called Birmingham, AL the most segregated city in the US. Him and 50 others were arrested on Good Friday because of what they did and all the sit-ins. After he got arrested he wrote a letter to white religious leaders who thought he was being too aggressive. These were known as "Letters from a Birmingham Jail."

August 28, 1963 - March on Washington. King’s “I Have a Dream” Speech

Cause- This march became one of the most important events in History. He gave this speech to A LOT of civil rights marchers who wanted the government to treat everyone with equality. Before giving this speech, he had a whole paper on what he was going to say. After he got up there and started talking, he didn't use his paper and the whole speech came from his heart.

July 2, 1964 - President Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1964

Effect- Banned discrimination in public places and employment based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin.

Connection- I can connect this event to learning about Jackie Robinson and MLK. These were people who worked hard to get segregation illegal and this is what made it happen.

February 21, 1965 - Civil Rights leader Malcolm X is murdered

Cause- As he was getting ready to do a speech a bunch of assassins pinned/gunned him to the ground. He was shot 20 times. They did this because they didn’t like him and because he was no longer supporting blacks as much and left the group he was originally a part of.

August 6, 1965 - President Johnson signs the Voting Rights Act of 1965

Effect- This act made poll taxes and literacy tests illegal. It also gave the federal government the power to register votes where locals prevented Blacks from voting as well.

April 4, 1968 - Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is assassinated in Memphis Tennessee

Effect- He was standing on the balcony of Lorraine Hotel in Memphis, TN. He died when he was 39 years old. James Ear Ray was the one who murdered him. The day before he was shot, he gave a speech basically saying that he wants a long life but it doesn't really matter. This gave an eerie feel to the world and the next day, he was assassinated. This assassination was very similar to JFK's assassination.

May 4th, 1970: Kent State shootings
