My fourth grade teacher read this to us, one chapter at a time. We hung on her every word, even begged to stay inside during recess to hear more of the story. It tells a fictionalized account of the smuggling of Jewish people from Denmark, and the story has always stuck with me.

I'm sure all of my kindergarten and first grade teachers know this, but this is one of my favorite books to read aloud to students. It's such an easy way to share that we owe kindness and decency to one another. After all, a person's a person, no matter how small.

Awkward! I can't remember a single book I read at home as a child except this encycolopedia-style book about dog breeds that I would look in to compare pictures and make wish lists for dogs I wanted to have as pets. I remember a couple High School books for class: Animal Farm, Iliad & Odyssey, The Scarlet Letter, Light in August, and The Color Purple. I do remember vividly, however, getting the local Sunday newspaper, The Kokomo Tribune, where I would read all the comics, complete the cross word puzzles, and then read the Parade Magazine. I was also an active reader of the TV guide! I completed the crossword puzzle in the back of those each week, too! Don't feel sorry for me, though! Once I started teaching, I became a book hoarder of the highest order. About 7 years into my teaching, I was introduced to books on a leisure level and found a new love! Now, my TBR stack is ridiculous!
