<title>Foods at HDS is a course that most students instantly love! We get to be messy, have fun, and eat great food! Grade 6, 7, and 8 HDS students learn basic food preparation practices, including proper measuring techniques for liquids and solids, how to read and follow a recipe, and how to handle various kitchen equipment safely. Students also explore how to replace ingredients to adjust the flavor, price, and nutritional balance of certain recipes. Some of the food we have prepared this year include:</title>

<title>Smoothies are a great way to start each course as they are simple to assemble, don’t make much mess, and you can use different fruit depend on the season (or what is on sale). This is a popular activity with students and leads to some great conversations about how to make meals within a budget and how to swap ingredients to make it more tailored to an individual’s tastes. This also leads to good discussions about making healthy choices, and how to preserve or freeze fruits so that you can make cheap smoothies year round. Here are two great smoothies recipes that I use in my class:</title>

<title>Crepes are always a fun class and you won’t find many kids who aren’t enthusiastic to whip up some delicious toppings to go on their crepe. Crepes are a great activity in class because each student can make his/her own and the actual cooking time is very short so the activity moves along at quite a fast pace. Students love demonstrating the crepe “swivel” technique! I use this class to talk about safety with stovetops, as well as how altering this recipe would change the final result. I almost always have one group who use dairy free milk, or gluten free flour so it is interesting for the class to observe the subtle (or not so subtle) differences that it has on the final crepe. Here is a link to a great crepe recipe and a simple berry sauce that can be used on the crepes:</title>
