Jamie Bruce
Activity 3.1
As of 2019, Amazon is not considered as a monopoly; although the Federal Trade Commission is currently probing the company. Amazon falls short of meeting the monopoly threshold of greater than 50 percent.

There are several companies with huge market shares and that are near monopolies. Anheuser-Busch, one of the world’s largest brewing companies. However, the company’s market share is only 4634 percent. Tyson Foods is only at about a 25 percent market share. Tyson is a leader in the meatpackers company, but falls short. Intel is known for microprocessors and has a long history in the computer industry. They are also known for strategic pricing, however; in 2014 seemed to have given up on the run for monopoly entirely. Intel also falls short in the market share, and is in current talks with Altera Corporation which would be Intel’s biggest-ever acquisition. Monopoly suggests complete control of an entire supply of goods or services in a certain area or market. Unfortunately, these companies fall short.

When it comes to Amazon, I don't think at this time they are a monopoly. I think they have a great opportunity to become one in the future. With more people utilizing them for online shopping and the great prices and shipping they have to offer, they could easily become the one and only form of online shopping. At that point they would be consider a monopoly since they would hold complete control.
When it comes to firms near becoming a monopoly, I think that there are quite a few. I think since Facebook took over Myspace, they are closer to becoming the only one of their kind. There are still other apps out there that have the same opportunities, but Facebook is still going strong. Google is other one that could become a monopoly. With them being the main form a search engine used, they could easily become the only one.

By definition Amazon is not a monopoly yet. If they continue to purchase more competitors rather than work with them though they will become one. Amazon has a diverse set of online companies that they have acquired like Zappos.com to cut costs and diversify their products they offer, but I'm sure they know they are under the microscope of the SEC most of the time. Which surely makes them dot their i's and cross their t's. They are a business and they are trying to make a profit.
Now when I think of monopolies I think of any utility bill. Most people don't have a choice in their provider, but they can pick their supplier. There are a ton of regulations on energy bills already so, an other one I can think of is Sirius XM radio. The only two satellite radio providers Sirius and XM radio merged making them the only satellite radio provider. By definition Sirius XM is a monopoly, but I can still listen to iHeart radio for free whenever I want. I guess everyone just let it slide.

In many ways I do believe that Amazon has a monopoly at the moment. That isn't to say they are one. I believe that their response times, accuracy, and selection is driving other businesses to become more innovative themselves. Walmart is now offering next day delivery along with Target and other re-sellers. At the moment I would say that Amazon has a monopoly, I would also say because of them I can not get next day or same day deliveries from other companies as well. Amazon is changing the market, forcing businesses to change along with it or be left behind. Where I believe large companies can keep up with Amazon it is the same local stores that cannot change with this type of demanding market.

I fel that Amazon is on its way to be a monopoly but by currently by definition it i not one. They are making their competitors strive to become more innovative and more competitive. I strongly believe that Amazon with be a monopoly in the next few years because they keep acquiring companies like zappos.com to help diversify their product lines and to cut costs and competition. Another company I see as a monopoly is MCTV. The are the only internet, phone, and cable provider in the Massillon area. They have also purchased a small business in Monroe County that used to provide phone, internet, and cable services in that area. Anyone in these areas has to pay MCTV's outrageous prices if they want any of these services.

By definition, i do not believe that Amazon is a monopoly itself. I believe that thew way things are going, it is on the fast track to becoming what could be considered one by many, but the the laws in place it may not become a full fledged one. I believe the better definition for it would be an oligopoly, which is where the market is controlled by very few businesses versus one exact. This is how I view Amazon, who continues to purchase different businesses to keep their company specifically exclusive, but not so much in the way it becomes a monopoly. There are so many loopholes when it comes to this.
As far as companies that are becoming a monopoly, the biggest I can think of is Disney. Back in the day, they would talk with other companies to do their animation, others for design and even others for release. Now, as a company, they control every single thing from the bottom to the top. While they have other competition, they are purchasing rights to everything, releasing them under the company name but making sure everyone knows that its a Disney company.

By definition, Amazon is not a monopoly. While they are an enormous company with a vast array of specialized divisions and services, nearly every aspect of their business faces competition from an outside source. For instance, their Prime Video service competes with Netflix and Hulu, their retail services compete with Walmart and Target, and their Web Services compete with Google.

I do not believe there are any companies that are close to becoming nationwide monopolies, likely due to anti-monopoly law. There are many companies however that have local monopolies where there is only one option for a good or service.

I believe that Amazon is a monopoly. They definifinity control the market because there are no other companies that can hold a candle to the service Amazon provides. While they have full control of the market due to their superb advertising and next day service is extraordinarily convenient, which increases their profits so much it seems to be abnormal.
I do not believe there any other companies that are becoming a monopoly.

I do not believe that Amazon is a monopoly. By definitions it does not fit that category. Amazon provides a very good service but it is not the only supplier for a majority of the items it sells. Amazon acts similarly to Walmart however it is not a tangible store that you can visit. I cannot think of a big company that is becoming close to a monopoly due to laws that have been put into place to prevent such things from happening.

I believe that Amazon is not a monopoly. There are plenty of competition in the world of online shopping. You have stores like Dicks Sporting Goods who have an online shopping portion, Target, Walmart and plenty of other retail stores who also share a piece of that competition. Amazon is just exclusively all online.

While Amazon is a large company, I believe that it is not a monopoly. Except, it is on its way to becoming one. Yes, there are competitors like other big name companies. Although, these other companies do not compare to Amazon's two-day shipping and other perks. A person can find almost anything on Amazon. I cannot say the same for other companies. They just do not offer such a vast array of products.
I cannot think of any firms that are becoming monopolies since the Anti-Trust Laws are in place.
