Labaree Discussion Questions 9/19/23 by Alice Carcilli

How do you see educational goals being realized in our schools? Are schools working towards all three of Labaree’s goals at the same time? Or, do schools promote one of these goals at the expense of the other two? Or is something different going on?

I think a combination of all three of his "goals" at their basic level is what is going on today. We still teach about the American government, we do offer vocational and academics as an option and the elite schools will probably always exist for those that can afford it. Labaree made a point of each generation trying to offer their children a little bit better than they had. Debbie R

There are a lot of ways in which public schools show aspects of each of these three goals. Schools have a lot of ways in which they are like their own world. They create their own language and community which definitely supports democratic equality. In most cases, everyone has the chance for equal education in public schooling. There has also been an increase in technical classes being brought into public schools like woodshop and such, but also a lot of interest in technical schools where jobs can be found straight out of college with what they learned in high school. I think the most prominent goal that is shown in schools would be social mobility. Students tend to put a lot more effort into things that they are being graded on, but also tend to do the bare minimum when they think that what they are doing is not going to be on the next test or homework assignment. They are focusing on earning their credentials by simply skimming by rather than for the sake of learning which I think the grading systems in our schools definitely promote.

I think that all of the goals are tryin to be realized in our schools and that different schools try their best to but, like with the social mobility perspective most parents want their kids to succeed even at the expense of others and I don’t think anything will change that. I believe that democratic equality is prioritized just because of the fact that its the easiest to achieve because its less personal and everyone can be on the same page.

All of Laboree's goals are present today in the American education system and specifically in Ocean City High School where I went to high school. I felt that there was a priority to get everyone to graduate rather than to actually learn what we were being taught. It was easy for me to skate by in school even though I did not want to learn what was being taught typically.

I see it through things such as standardized testings and even stuff like ieps. I think think schools are trying to work towards all three goals but finding the balance between all three is still an ongoing issue.

I believe they are making a bigger effort to achieve some of Labarees goals. More so social efficiency. There is a lot more vocational and career-based schools available to kids. I went to a vocational school that had majors where students learn things they can get a job in or ahead in the education of certain jobs trades while still doing the basic school things. Schools are actively trying to make resources available to everyone who wants it while other people do have more access to the opportunities. It's a work in progress.

I feel as though not every school is tailored to Labarees goals but there are school near by that might have certain strengths that others are lacking. for example in EHT you can to their high school or go to ACIT which is more tailored to the students intrested I feel as though most of the school that are lacking are just trying to get their students a degree and dont pioritize actual learning
