Video summary: The children in the video below explained what it is like at school with dyslexia. Some of the kids struggled in the beginning because they didn't receive proper treatment or help when they needed it. Many of the children explained how it was frustrating and sad to see everyone in their class ahead of them and thriving while they were behind struggling on something that shouldn't be challenging. But, these children are learning to accept their disability and have started to become proud of themselves. "Dyslexia doesn't mean you're stupid. It means you're really smart and different than other people."

Many smart and famous people such as Leonardo Da Vinci an inventor and artist and Albert Einstein a famous and well-known scientist had dyslexia! One in ten people have dyslexia and fortunately, dyslexia doesn't have much impact on the success of children after they have completed school.

Video summary: Children with dyslexia may have a harder time completing tasks and focusing in school. To help with completing these tasks and being on the same page as the rest of the class, private tutoring can help a child struggling with dyslexia. If possible and if tutoring is available, it can help a child out especially since the classroom isn't the best learning environment for someone with dyslexia.

Video summary: Dyslexia is when a student's reading and writing skills are affected and when a student has trouble remembering or processing information that they saw or heard. When teaching children with dyslexia, you should:
- Use dyslexia-friendly fonts (comic sans, Arial) so that the letters aren't too crowded. This helps children see the different parts of each letter/word.
- Use colored backgrounds in PowerPoint/google slides presentations, and use off-white paper for handouts.
- Give your children thinking time, to let them process information without rushing.
- Reduce the amount of note-taking/copying down stuff during class
- Use visuals
- Explain information in various ways
- Multi-sensory approach
- Encourage alternatives to writing - use drawing
- Have planning templates
- Make sure reading resources are appropriate for the students
- Teach key vocabulary

Your child won't have all of the symptoms but they may have a few such as: learning to talk later, mispronouncing words, struggle to produce speech to an unfamiliar person, might be unable to remember the right word for familiar objects, slow to learn new vocabulary, hard time learning nursery rhymes/rhymes, trouble remembering sequences, tell stories that are hard to understand, difficulty following directions/a routine, etc. If you think your child has dyslexia, you should look for these symptoms above, so that you can get your child the help that they need.

Video summary: Children with dyslexia feel as if they are not good enough every single day. The media also reminds these children that having dyslexia means you're stupid. The speaker explains how she grew up with dyslexia and how the teachers told her that she was slower than all of the other children. She said that this didn't bring her down, but pushed her to work harder with her disability and she ended up being very successful. The speaker explains the importance of focusing on the good parts of yourself, instead of the bad. At the end of her speech, she says, "I would argue that children with dyslexia are born to stand out. Let's not force them to fit in." She conveys the message that just because a child has dyslexia, doesn't mean that they're less smart than others, it means that they have something special that can be used to their advantage if they believe in themselves and if they believe that they are smart too.

Video summary: Dyslexia is a language based learning disability. Although a lot of people see the negatives or weaknesses in children with dyslexia, children with dyslexia have may strengths such as: problem solving skills, creative mind, able to see the bigger picture, they're inventors, excellent pattern recognition, etc. Some symptoms include: struggle reading and spelling, forget newly learned words, have to relearn words, struggle sounding out words, do not read with punctuation, tire quickly, phonics is difficult, etc. Many children with dyslexia may not have all of the symptoms, but they will have some. When working with children with dyslexia, try to be positive and use eye contact. Dyslexia runs in families --> 20% of the population. The woman talking in the video thought that her son was ignoring her when she would ask a question, but he was just still processing what she asked, so it took him longer to respond. She had to realize that just because your child has dyslexia doesn't mean that they are lazy or stupid, it means that they have a learning difference where they need extra support. Main challenge: converting letters into correct sounds when reading and the opposite for writing. Very important: have your child build up confidence. Teachers are willing to help!

Video summary: When teaching somebody with dyslexia, the most important thing to do is to PRACTICE certain skills over and over again and a lot more than people without dyslexia because people with dyslexia take a lot longer to master these important skills. It is important for children with dyslexia to keep pushing and to not give up while practicing these skills, because if they don't master them, they are going to struggle moving forward.

I chose dyslexia as my topic for this project because I already knew some background information about this learning disability and was interested in learning more about it. I know that a lot of celebrities and geniuses have or had dyslexia and it doesn't seem like this disability got in the way of their success. I was hoping to find out about how children deal with or live with dyslexia and what their experience is like at school and I did! Many children with dyslexia explained how before they found out they had this disability, they were really behind in school and felt discouraged. They explained how it was very frustrating that they couldn't understand a topic that the class had already moved on from and they felt demotivated. But, each student was able to get help! Private tutoring has helped many students with dyslexia stay on top of their work in class and even get ahead. I also learned about the symptoms of dyslexia and what parents should look out for if they think their child might have dyslexia. Some symptoms include a slow reading speed, spelling difficulties, and problems recognizing new words and technical terms.

Out of everything I learned though, what I found most interesting and amazing is is how the mind of a dyslexic person works. These people have strengths that help them problem solve, be able to see the bigger picture, and they have excellent pattern recognition. This just shows that just because you're different or just because you have a learning disability doesn't mean you are not good or smart enough. We are all unique in our own ways.
