In 2015, the year ended with 991 deaths by police. Some of these numbers though, can be misleading. 730 of those 991 people were classified as "attack in progress" meaning they were harming others at the time the police arrived. Despite that fact though, this display is very similar to a death sentence for these people without a trial. Many of the killings listed noted the victims were unarmed and not dangerous. And many of those victims were people of color. Law officials deny racial profiling. Yet throughout history and even today, people of color are more susceptible to unreasonable search and seizure, and black drivers are almost twice as likely to get pulled over with no given reason (Washington Post). Racial profiling is not only prevalent, but ineffective: "alienates communities from law enforcement, hinders community policing efforts, and causes law enforcement to lose credibility and trust among the people they are sworn to protect and serve."(ACLU).  Police are sworn in using an oath that states
"On my honor,
I will never betray my badge,
my integrity, my character,
or the public trust.
I will always have
the courage to hold myself
and others accountable for our actions.
I will always uphold the constitution
my community and the agency I serve." (International Association of Chiefs of Police)
The oath directly states the Law enforcement officers will uphold the constitution, yet on multiple occasions have police brutality cases been explored on constitutional grounds through the 4th amendment and the 14th's equal protection. The Black Lives Matter organization has risen up, and staged protests and meeting across the country to try and enforce change. The Washington Times reports that police are going through training to diffuse situations, rather than act on impulse. The ACLU released an app to let bystanders more easily report cases of unfounded police brutality.
