Coraline is a movie directed by Henry Selick that deals with elements like child neglect, loneliness, and a dream gone wrong. It is about a girl who moves into a new house and is feeling miserable. She then travels to a different world through a small door in her house in which she finds her family but more to her liking. Selick, has made other films such as Moongirl, James and the Giant Peach, and The Nightmare Before Christmas. All of these movies have a lot in common; they all are stop motion films, they all have creepy themes, they have a bit of irony in them, and they all had their own original music. Coraline did not fail to follow these themes that Selick has set forth in his previous movies.

The very first thing I noticed when watching Coraline is the ominous music playing at the start of the movie. This music gave off a creepy vibe with dolls being made in the foreground. Dolls have also been seen in Selick’s movie The Nightmare Before Christmas in which a character named Sally was a doll. The music would be really quiet for a long period of time and then get loud which grabbed my attention again. Towards the middle of the movie, Coraline’s other father sings an original song (which I can only assume is named ‘Coraline.’) Coraline, along with A Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach, also had original songs in their films.

At the start of the actual movie, post-opening credits, we see Coraline’s apartment which she shares with other people. A small pink apartment called the ‘Pink Palace Apartments.’ An ironic image considering that the surrounding area is dark and gloomy and the apartments don’t look much like a magnificent palace as the name and font would suggest. We then see Coraline exploring the area around her new home. She dressed in her bright yellow raincoat surrounded by grey and dead plants and trees.

Major elements in Coraline

The first two major elements a person might notice when watching Coraline is child neglect and loneliness. At the start of the movie, viewers can see Coraline’s mother and father both trying to dismiss her so they can continue with their work. We can see Coraline has no one to talk to (besides a boy she calls a “stalker”) and misses her friends from her last home whom she has a picture of. These two elements set the premise of which the rest of the movie will be based on.

"A Dream Come True..."

Due to Coraline’s neglect and loneliness when she travels through a door in her home and finds her “other mother” and “other father,” it is like a dream come true to her. These other parents are exactly what she wants. They listen to what she has to say, they love her unconditionally, they sing songs for her, they garden with her, it’s the exact change that she wanted. However, it is not long for this dream to become sour. Her other parents tell her that she should stay with them forever and in order to do that she must replace her eyes with buttons. When she refuses the movie gains a “you belong to me” type vibe which has been seen in Selick’s other films. At this point, Coraline knows she wants to go back to her family - her real family.

The Ending to a Selick Film

After this, the movie becomes dark, creepy, and eerie, very fast - as Selick’s films tend to do. However, in the end, Coraline defeats the other mother and gets back to the real world with her real family. The movie then shows them becoming a happy family and joining the community with their neighbours. The movie shows that things do get better, however, it does not come when you want them to and it does take time. I think that Selick does a good job of making levelled movies. When I say that, I mean that he makes great movies if only looking at the surface so anyone can understand it while also, giving the movie a deeper meaning and portraying important topics that people have to live through.
