In this white community, there is extensive discrimination against blacks. They tend to identify themselves by their race, which is a shared value.

Language is the social practice that is the foundation of community formation, resulting in differing norms based on different discourses and spoken habits. (Kramsch 1993). Dolores' family discuss the black workers in the community in Italian, a cultural expression emphasising their sense of identity and empathy. The two black workers cannot interact when Tony speaks Italian because they do not possess the same linguistic norms and cannot understand the language.
