January: Setting Goals by Adult Foundational Education

This month, add activities or lessons you've used or created to teach a lesson on "setting goals" (or integrate this skill into other subjects). Add a link or file so others can view your activity. Don't forget to give attribution if you pull media or content from others. If you want to make it clear what other teachers can do with your material, consider adding a Creative Commons license.

I used the graphic organizer on Slide 1 to discuss goals as a whole class and then have individuals map out their goals in different areas. Part of this lesson was possessive pronouns so learners had conversations in pairs to talk about their goals and then they had to report back to the whole class using the correct possessive pronoun. Note that that first slide was adapted from something I found on the Digital Learning Selector: https://app.education.nsw.gov.au/digital-learning-selector/

Weekly Learning Goal Setting Form

This goal setting form was developed by Tiffany Brand, an educator in New Hampshire, to encourage students to spend time each week learning independently on the app/website of their choice. Using this template, you can create a form for each student, then share each learner's responses Sheet with them so they have the ability to track their weekly goals and actual time spent in learning over time. I like how this gives learners both choice in their learning, prompts them to set goals, and provides space for them to reflect on their progress on a regular basis.

I've used an activity very similar to this Mind Tools Treasure Mapping in a workshop with adult educators on goal-setting. We begin by focusing on an area of life (education, finance, relationships, health, etc.) and visualizing our future selves. Then choose/draw/create a visual to represent that future. Then visually represent the "path" to reaching the goal. Those who aren't comfortable drawing can search for digital images or cut from magazines.

Reading Skills for Today's Adults is a leveled reading library with over 300 stories, including stories related to goals (which can be great context starters for activities and lessons that connect to Teaching Skills that Matter! This nifty spreadsheet (created as part of an EdTech Maker Space) includes links of all of the stories in one place, along with links to supplemental activities that can be used as is or copied (Quizlet, Google Forms, and Wakelet). Stories about goal setting include "Goals", "Overcoming Obesity" (which connects to Health Literacy), "Pay Yourself First" (which connects to Financial Literacy), and "Elizabeth Wants a Career" (which connects to Workforce Preparation).

Get the conversation going by building self-awareness and autonomy. Sometimes, the idea of sharing a goal seems intimidating. Use this Jamboard to break the ice and get small groups talking about their goals. They may find someone else with the same goal in their class...
