Dear Alison,

I know you moved around some when you grew up. I know your relationship with your mom wasn’t the best, or really even great for that matter. Your mother had good qualities about her, but overall she wasn’t really as there for you or Vickie as she could have been. Your stories of your childhood mainly revolve around what you did to stay out of the house, horseback riding, jobs at pizza places, visiting your sister at work, even hopping the border to Canada once or twice. But when you talk about your mom it’s always about her drinking problem or her bipolar and how it hurt you. For that I really think you would appreciate the book ‘Glass Castle’ because the father in it is kind of similar. Your relationship with your own father was better, like the relationship between Jean and the mom in the book, but again, needed a little perking up to really be helpful. The book might be a decade or two late, or you might not even want to read it it to begin with, but I have a feeling you’d enjoy it, or at the very least it’d be helpful to know that there are more people in the world that have a relatively dysfunctional childhood and still turn out alright. This isn’t my telling you to go read a self help book or telling you that you need to delve into your childhood problems with your parents again, the purpose of this is purely for your own pleasure and if you choose to read it, so be it.

Jean above all else was perseverant. She battled with abusive parents, constant moving, severely below average income, and several other life crippling handicaps. Despite an older boy attempting to rape her when she hadn't even reached 10, her father trying sell her for booze, and the works. She survived even being homeless for a while and managed to move to New York and make a new life for herself and three out of her four siblings. She never gave up. She knew she wanted out of her life and she found a good way to do it.

Geodes- through out the book Jean collects geodes. She says they are similar to her because on the outside they're plain and dirty but on the inside they're beautiful.
Alcohol- through out her life, her perspective on whats going on is very similar to the stages of being drunk. First its happy because you don't really know whats going on, then as you become more aware you become more upset, then you try to get back to happy only to find that the more you drink the worse it gets, then you hit a breaking point and when you sober up you see where you are and how to get home.
Cars- her life in the beginning was constantly breaking down and puttering, but she got on her feet.

This meme contains fire and a cute dog to symbolise how everything is going terrible in her life (and how a lot of things caught on fire) but she is powering through it with more as much 'umph' as she can. So really, this is fine.
