In the beginning of the 1960's many citizens believed they were at the dawn of the "Golden Age" but it never materialized. John F Kennedy even tried to create a new frontier which was a package of laws that was thought up to eliminate injustice and inequality in the U.S. Kennedy was shot in 1964 and Johnson was sworn in as the new president. Johnson claimed he wanted he wanted to make the U.S into a great society and that would fix poverty and racial injustice. The Vietnam war was the government's top priority at this point and there was simply not enough money to continue. The struggle for civil rights was a really defining moment in our history. The federal government stayed out of the civil war until about 1964. No matter what president Johnson tried to do laws did not solve the problems facing African Americans. Just as black power became the new focus of the civil war in the mid 1960's, the counterculture also seemed to grow more outlandish as the decade wore on. It seemed that the nation was falling apart, at the end of the 1960's. Some young people "dropped out" of political life altogether. These "hippies" grew long hair and practiced "Free Love". The everyday life in the 1960's had come to a bad patch, very shaky and the hippies moved away to communes which are just groups of people living together and sharing possessions and responsibilities. In 1968 the optimism from everyone went sour. The Vietnam war was thought to be impossible to win. At the end of march the democrat party split and Johnson backed out of his reelection campaign and around this time Martin Luther King Jr and Bobby John F Kennedy's brother was assassinated. By the end of the decade the era's legacy remained mixed and it brought us empowerment and liberation. But it has become a permanent part of our cultural and political lives.

The 1960's is most commonly associated with the "Counter Culture Movement" or the hippy movement. Many young people in the country were angered with the war in Vietnam. Most of the people in the country did not support the war and did not believe they should be forced to go fight in it. Musicians during the time period released many anti war songs and spread the counter culture movement across the country. Songs like "Fortunate Son" by C.C.R showcased the way many young people felt about serving in the war in Vietnam. The 1960's changed culture for all of time by spreading the message of peace and love.

At the beginning of the 1960s, many Americans believed they were standing at the dawn of a golden age. On January 20, 1961, the handsome and charismatic John F. Kennedy became president of the United States. His confidence that, as one historian put it, “the government possessed big answers to big problems” seemed to set the tone for the rest of the decade. However, that golden age never materialized. On the contrary, by the end of the 1960s it seemed that the nation was falling apart. This is primarily due to the money spent trying to compete with the Soviet Union in the arms and space races.
