Phonemic awareness is the awareness and manipulation of distinctive individual phonemes which are sounds. Phonemic awareness embodies the ability to hear, think about, identify, and manipulate sounds in spoken words. In other words, it is learning the relationship between sounds and printed words.

It was difficulty for me to distinguish between phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, and phonics. The knowledge I have gained in this area is currently applied into my classroom.

Isolating individual sounds.
In the activity below provided by Reading by Phonics, this worksheet gives prompts and focus for a letter. The student must mark where they hear that specific phoneme (beginning, middle, or end). This will help children identify beginning, middle, and ending sounds in words. This activity is appropriate for different types of learners. I would recommend this activity for ELL students and students who are beginning phonemic awareness instruction

The Mansion Match: Alphabet Match is a game that can be played with letter match or letter sound match. This is appropriate for all learners! This helps children recognize letter name and sound. As well, it records the percentage the child got right at the end so they can monitor their own progress and try again for the next game. I use this game for my students who have alphabet recognition as one of their IEP goals.

In the article below, Anna Ranson explains a great activity appropriate for Kindergarten and 1st Grade. The Sorting Baskets activities consists of allocating baskets to a specific phonemes. This is a great sensory activity for children which helps with engagement. Next, you grab items for each phoneme. Have these items laid out for the student and have them sort the items according to the beginning phoneme in the word. This can be modified during distance learner by having columns for phonemes. Then having images of certain items and having the student allocate the images into the correct phoneme column.
