Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust

Samantha Hornby

Principal Social Worker

Sam.Hornby@mpft.nhs.uk

I’m part of the collective Senior leadership team responsible for the professional and practice leadership for Adult Social Work under a Section 75 Partnership Agreement with Staffordshire County Council. I report to the Director of Social Work.

I previously trained as a Registered Mental Health Nurse and decided to take a change of direction into social work because of my passion for social justice for people with mental health issues. I’ve been a qualified Social Worker since 1998 and completed my ASW/ Approved Mental Health training in 2003/2007. I’ve continued to practice as an AMHP at a reduced level due with my current role. I am also a Practice Educator and continue to support off-site student Social Workers within Adult mental health. I am now embarking on the Approved Clinician programme with Northumbria University.

I have a lead role in supporting the development and delivery of our Social Care Strategy and provide operational management and delivery support including business and workforce planning, ensuring staff groups are effectively supported and developed within a range of statutory
responsibilities.
One of my key achievements has been the development of a clear career pathway through the Social Work Learning Academy enabling the workforce to develop and embedding a learning culture. Supporting Social Workers through their Assessed and Supported Year in Employment,
Apprenticeships, Pre AMHP, Approved Mental Health Practitioner, Best Interest Assessor and Practice Educator programmes/training enables staff to feel valued and integral to the delivery of a high quality service to individuals with Mental Health needs in Staffordshire. I am also the lead for the Think Ahead programme in MPFT. To date we have supported 18 participants and will be embarking on an ongoing rolling Think Ahead programme. This partnership with Think Ahead has been hugely successful in successor planning for our workforce.
Research is integral to Social work to initiate, to establish
and to embed this culture in our organisation. The SWLA have been successful in 2 Social Care Research engagement projects together in collaboration with our
Research and development team and local HEI’s, raising the profile of Social Care in the NHS.
I am deeply committed to striving for parity of esteem for
individuals with mental health needs and embedding the value of social work.

The NIHR School for Social Care Research have recently approved a Practice Based Research Leadership Award (PBRLA) and 12-month project funding to Karen Nixon (PSW at Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, MPFT) to develop her project that aims produce a dedicate research engagement and learning programme for social care and social work practitioners. This project called STARSWARS (Supporting The Advancement of Research Skills Work AcRoss Social care) is supported by the Department of Research and Innovation at MPFT (R&I MPFT) and aims to develop and pilot a dedicated social care research engagement and skills programme that will be available to all social care staff at MPFT/local authority initially, but will have the capacity to be shared widely via established social care and social work professional networks. STARSWARS will produce two aligned outputs, firstly a “stand-alone” set of research engagement and research skills introductory videos, and secondly a set of adjoined in-depth training workshops that will initially be piloted to relevant MPFT and partner local authority staff with an evaluation component that can then have potential for upscale regionally based on the outcomes of the evaluation.

This project represents a trailblazer research journey for Karen, who initially was introduced to research via her role as practitioner lead within the MPFT R&I Social Care Research Engagement Project (SCREEN). SCREEN looked to seed the development of a research culture within social care at MPFT, and as a result Karen applied and was successful in obtaining a Clinical Research Network West Midlands "Professional Development Award" to lead the future of social care practitioner research at MPFT, leading to taking on this new and exciting role of Principal Investigator for the STARSWARS project.

In early 2020 the R&I department were successful in obtaining two-year funding from the local National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) to establish a project to develop and sustain research interest, engagement, and activity for all social care and social work staff at MPFT.

This project called SCREEN (Social Care Research EngagemENt) started by engaging key leads within social work at MPFT (Pauline Bonner, Karen Nixon, Sam Hornby) linked with key academics from Keele University to set a series of objectives to enable and sustain growth of social care research. Three years on from launching the project, there are several achievements to celebrate: • Established a research Special Interest Group bringing practitioners and academics together to drive future research strategy. • Involved practitioners in a joint MPFT and Keele University research project investigating the impact of COVID-19 on social work practice, and practitioners led a large MPFT social care staff survey, both studies published in the British Journal of Social Work: doi.org/10.1093/bjsw/bcab169 and doi.org/10.1093/bjsw/bcab166. • Engagement of practitioners within MPFT STARS programme to increase research skills and learning. • Two practitioners (Social Worker Stacey Wilde, Principal Social Worker Karen Nixon) received Research Career Development Awards to enable dedicated time to develop research. • Hosted two large online conference events attended by social care practitioners across the region, and many members of SCREEN presented at several external conferences. • Production of a step-by-step research career pathway interactive guide to inform practitioners on the steps they can take to become involved in research. SCREEN has gone from strength to strength with notable markers of impact including winning the Clinical Research Network “Collaboration in Research” award in 2021, being invited as members of the new West Midlands Social Care Research Partnership, being consulted by Social Care Wales and NHS Cornwall to advise on their strategies to engage social care practice with research, and recently being used as a case study for success within the British Association of Social Work Research Charter. Karen Nixon and the team recently secured funding from the School for Social Care Research to create a dedicated research training platform for social care practice, and SCREEN project lead Dr Paul Campbell (MPFT R&I) was recently appointed to head up an NIHR programme (involving Keele, Birmingham, and Warwick Universities) to increase dementia based social care research across the region

I am part of a number of groups for neuro-diverse Social Workers on a few social platforms, which is where I saw a request for Neuro-diverse Social Workers to share our experiences to collate into a book to be published. I got in touch with the team and submitted the requested artwork and reflections. I was thrilled when they responded and told me they wanted to use my work. It was such an honour to be accepted, and an equal honour to be published alongside these other amazing neuro-diverse Social Workers sharing their experiences. This is such a challenging role we have and at times I’ve faced many difficulties, which I have had to adapt to and overcome; I’m still learning to do this. I’m fortunate to be part of an amazing and supportive team, who are also thanked in the narrative in the book.”
