The application layer is the top layer of the OSI model. It is responsible for providing services to the user so that effective communication with another application in a network is possible. The application layer is the visual layer which is displayed to the user and the one in which they interact with.

This layer is responsible, in this process, to provide a service to the user and this is something everyone that wants to communicate will need. This is applications like Outlook, Skype or Facebook for example. This is one of the only visual layers and the one layer where you can edit and change. This layer uses the information you type in and passes the information through to the presentation layer which will then change and process that data. This also then receives the data from the presentation layer to make it visable for the person recieving the message. It is the layer that provides the interface between the applications we use to communicate.
