The Yalta conference was a major meeting conference discuss the plans after the war. The conference consisted of three allied leaders who were Franklin D Roosevelt president of the US. Prime minister winston Churchill of the united kingdom. Also the premier of the soviet union Joseph Stalin. The plan of this meeting was to plan a final defeat of nazi germany and its occupation. Another agreement that was made at the yalta conference was that Germany would be divided into four occupation zones which were the US, Uk, USSR and France.

Germany is divided (1945)

Germany was officially defeated after WW2. Which this led to Germany being dived into 2 zones western germany and eastern germany. Western germany was controlled by the United states, UK and France. While eastern Germany was controlled by the Soviet Union. The reason why this event is important because it later caused events like the berlin blockade, Berlin airlift and then the berlin wall.

The post dam conference (July 17-August 2, 1945)

The post dam conference was a meeting between the allied powers which was Joseph Stalin, Churchill and the president of the US Harry Truman. They were there to discuess peace plans in europe and the future of europe.

The iron curtain speech was a speech was delivered by Winston Churchill to discuss about the ideological border and was used as a metaphor to describe the border between western Germany and eastern Germany.Where eastern Germany was a satellite state and did not actually have freedom while western Germany did. The reason this speech was important because it alerted people of communism expandment and supported the idea of containment.

The Truman Doctrine was speech given out by the President Harry Truman. Which was about a foreign policy that the US would help out countries that were being affected by communism. Which cause and immediate reason to economic and military aid to the government of greece because they were threatened with communism by turkey.

The Marshall plan was a US sponsored program which was meant to help the economies of 17 western and southern european countries. The plan was that this would help the countries and that they would be stable functioning countries again were democracy could live. This program was singed into law by the US president who was Harry Truman

The Cold War (1945-1991)

The cold war was some sort of competition or almost like rivalry between the soviet union and the united states. This competition between the two countries was developed after war. The reason this tension between these two countries rose and developed because of the Soviet Union who installed saliete states in countries in eastern europe. Brittan and the US believed this was a threat which because the spread of communism. Although this wasn't before the cold started just a like a key part of why it happened. The cold war was fought over ideas on economic and political ideas like the soviet union was communist while the US was capitalist. Although it was not fought directly but indirectly using other nations. The war officially ended when the Soviet Union was dissolved in december 1991

Berlin Blockade (June 24, 1948)

The Berlin Blockade was a crisis that was caused by the soviet union. The soviet union reason was to force wester allied powers to leave their post. The blockade where the soviet union blocked all rail, road and water access into western berlin. The reason why this is important because this caused the Berlin Airlift to drop supplies and aid to people who needed it. Soviet union ended this blockade on May 12, 1949.

Berlin Airlift (June 24, 1948-May 12, 1949)

Berlin airlift was an operation that was carried out by the US and the UK. Which the operation was to fly in food fuel, and other types of supplies to people in West berlin because of the Berlin Blockade that the soviet union caused. The blockade officially ended on may 12 1849 although supplies were still flown out.

Korean War (1950-1953)

What caused the build up for this war was because after the defeat of japan Korea was divided along the 38th parallel which was into 2 zones north and south Korea. The Korean war as a three year long war between south and north Korea. North Korea was supported by the Soviet union and china who were both communists while South Korea Korea was supported by the United States who were capitalists. The reason why this is important because this was one of the first major conflicts of the cold war. Which all of this started because of North Korea when they invaded south korea in 1950 by surprise invasion where they crossed the 38th parrell. Us sends troops under General Douglas MacArthur. Which then Mcarthur launches an attack landing at Lincoln which was behind enemy lines. Late October china now sends troops to help out north korea which the Un forces are now being pushed back and they suffer from a lot of casualties. Finally the war stands at a stalemate which was near the 38th parallel. Finally an armistice was signed on july 27, 1953 where both sides sign a ceasefire agreement. Demilitarized zone is now put in place and still stands in place. Why this is important is because it shows us why korea still remains divided at the 38th parallel. Furthermore the war is estimated that it caused to 2.5 to 4 million deaths.

The Building Of the Berlin Wall (August 13, 1961)

The Berlin Wall was now a physical barrier between western Germany and eastern Germany. It was built by the eastern German government. Its purpose was to keep eastern Germans inside of their country and prevent from eastern Germans fleeing to western Germany. The reason for this was because the Eastern German government was scared that they were losing to much skilled workers and professionals. The wall separated communism from eastern germany and a democratic government from western germany.Although it was a presented as a defense against fascism from western Germany.

The Formation Of Nato (1949)

The formation of nato was the North Atlantic treaty organization. It was a military alliance which was formed by 12 founding countries which including the US was leading Nato. The reason Nato was created so countries could defend each other from the threat of soviet union expansion. Also it was created to prevent more of the spread of soviet control. Which later this cause the soviet union to form its own alliance which was called the warsaw pact and was created in 1955.

Bay of pigs invasion (April 17, 1961)

The bay of pigs invasion was a failed attempt of invading Cuba backed by the US government which the goal was to overthrow the Cuban government who was being controlled by Fidel Castro at the time. It was planned by president Dwight Eisenhower although it didn't happen till President John F kennedy carried the operation out. The invasion consisted of 1,500 cuban exiles who did not support Fidel castro the cia trained which they were known as Bridge 2506. The US was outnumbered by cuban military in two days the operation ended with failure and the exiles were either captured or killed.

Cuban Missile crisis (October 16, 28 1962)

The Cuban Missile Crisis was a 13 day sstand off between the United States and the Soviet union. The reason for this standoff was because of the soviet union who installed nuclear missiles in cuba which they did secretly. Was discovered by a US spy plane. Which the purpose of the missiles were to defend cuba from any other US invasion. Eventually John f kennedy ordered the a naval blockade around in cuba and then he demanded removal of the missles. The reason why this was so important because the world was closer to nuclear war. Which eventually led to a resolution being made on october 28 1962 Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles in return the us did not invade cuba and they also removed US missiles from turkey later on.

The Vietnam War (November 1, 1955- April 30, 1975)

The vietnam war was a conflict between North Vietnam who were communists and were supported by the soviet union and china while south vietnam was anti communism and was supported by the US who were democratic capitalist country. It started when North vietnam defeated the french in in vietnam in 1954. This was done and meant to unify the country under communist rule while South vietnam wanted to a vietnam that was close to the ideological values like the US democracy and capitalism. There was heavy US involvement in the war over 500,000 US troops were stationed in vietnam at some point. The war was fought on guerrilla warfare and in jungles which made it hard for the US to identify enemies like Vietcong. This war was very unpopular in the united states. The outcome was that North vietnam won the war and country was now unified under communist rule. Over 58,000 americans died while millions of vietnamese died.

The anti war movement (1960s)

The antiwar movement started to grow and take shape in the early 1960s because of how the US started escalating its military involvement in Vietnam. Protests were organized by college students and by people who wanted peace in the country. An example of these groups were students for a democratic society.

Detente (1969-1979)

The goal of this was to improve trade and communications. Which an example of this is the signing of the strategic arms limitation talks treaties. The relationship between these two countries were between Richard Nixon Us president and the Soviet Leader who was Leonid Brezhnev.

President Richard Nixon president of the United States made a trip to china. It was the first time a US president visited china since the communist revolution. Nixon arrives inn beijing to meet with Mao Zedong. The reason why this is important because it led to future corporation and improved relationship with china and the US and is what paved the way for US and China trade relationship.

The fall of the soviet union was when was the official collapse of the soviet union happened which ceased to be a country. This finally ended the communist rule in the country. Which led the 15 republics to become independent countries which included Russia, Ukraine, estonia and Kazakhstan. This is important because this officially marked the end of the cold war and ending communism for once in Europe
