Question 3-

Narrative approach is better compared to presenting an essay because we will know how an observant can perform better than others, who blindly follow instruction. The whole message is conveyed in a way whereby we can relate to because it happens in our daily life, allowing us to understand the message behind it more clearly. Following instruction on essay cannot see the extra subtle details on a particular object, as opposed to doing it practically. Observing allows us to analyse a particular object from different point of view, allowing us to know a certain object more detailed. In the story, Scudder found himself more capable of spotting subtle details of the fish when he started to analyse it with his own pen.The writer wants to emphasize more on how to be a good observant. On top of that, readers may find it more interesting when reading a narrative essay rather than a factual essay.

Question 4

When it comes to the draft of an essay, this method allows us to spot the subtle details that people normally do not notice. By being observant, we will read through what we have written for a few times to check whether there are mistakes or not in the essay. This is where the real value of being an observant comes. As a quote said, the outsider sees most of the game. When we are in the middle of writing, we tend to look pass some mistakes as our mind is fully indulged in churning out more ideas rather than being meticulous with constructing the sentence. Therefore, being observant when writing an essay will aid us to spot and avoid the mistake.

Tjun Mun & Alvin

3) Scudder uses a narrative approach to describe his learning experience from Professor Agassiz to tell the readers that he himself feels nostalgic. --> State.
Hence he misses the feeling of excitement whilst perlexed while he was finding the "symmetrical sides with paired organs" of the fish. --> Example
So Scudder uses a narrative approach to make the readers feel like they are reading a story or a detailed account of his fish experience. -> Explain

4) In my academic life. The power of observation by Scudder can be applied in my work delegated by teachers to spot any hidden or unobvious anamolies. For example in Accounting when my lecturer tells me that my trial balance does not balance. I will apply the same observation skills to search for the mistake made in the T-accounts until I find it. I will then achieve the same satisfaction which Scudder obtained when he found the "symmetrical sides" of the fish. The trial balance balances is the time that I achieve full satisfaction.
In writing an essay I will have the power of observation of scudder to spot grammatical mistakes or spelling errors. I can also use it to find incorrect sentences and correct it.
At the same time we can use the power of observation by Scudder to skim through the paragraphs to find and construct new ideas for the next paragraph in the event you are stuck for new ideas.

Q3- Scudder used a narrative approach because he wants us to imagine the situation he was in. He wants the readers of this article to understand that there is more than one thing that what you can conclude from observing. Observation makes us discover new things.By presenting an essay, we would not be able to understand the analytical view of the writer. For example, Scudder did not understand the purpose of his professor that gave him a fish to observe. After a few attempts , he finally came up with an observation without seeing the fish. As a reader, I found that it was more interesting than a factual essay.

Q4 - Considering our academic or professional life, the process of observation Scudder praised here can be successfully applied to the subject Critical Thinking. The observation makes us think and let us observe small things around us. Moreover, we must look upon before we can hope to understand something completely .We should not let the facts get in the path of the truth.By doing so, we can applied it to the draft of an essay that we are currently revising as we would be more observant .After all, our eyes can't think, but they can give you information require to produce a thought about something you see. For example, Scudder could differentiate the small details in the same type of fishes.

Using an essay method that only list the steps on becoming a better observer will not attract the reader’s attention. Therefore, Scudder wanted to add his story so that readers would know and understand how to apply it in their daily life. A narrative approach allows readers to enjoy his writing, instead of just feeling forced to read it. This way, they'd be interested to learn and be able to benefit from his writing.
Question 4.
The process of observation that Scudder praises, can successfully be applied to our academic life as it teaches us to pay more attention. Being observant not only gives us an idea for questions but also leads us to answers for our questions. For example, while solving a math sum, there may be more than one way of solving it and most of the time, we tend to overthink the question and use a complicated way of solving them, until we are taught by our teacher, to observe and realise that there is a simpler way of solving the problem.

3. Narrative approach can describe more details about the situation. By using narrative approach, the details of the process Scudder learned from Professor Agassiz can remind reader's own experience. Scudder was miserable when he could not satisfy Professor Agassiz with his several observations. For example, Professor Agassiz ask Scudder to observe the fish over and over .Everyone went through this process as Scudder did but at the end Scudder had succeed by his observation. This has encouraged more and more reader to not give up easily.Besides, this also relate to ourselves. As readers, we can feel what Scudder felt through the narrative approach. If Scudder uses listing the steps, reader unable to observe the process and get the feeling of the situation.
4. Our eyes cannot think, but they can provide us necessary information required to process a talk about something we see. The process of observation Scudder praises here can be successfully applied to Critical Thinking Skill. We should think more critically and not simply take everything at face value as what Professor Agassiz said “Facts are stupid things until brought into connection with some general law.”For example, we learn to observe advertisement to analyze the purpose and the hidden meaning of it. Observation can be apply to a draft of an essay. When we stuck at thinking about our contents , we can observe surrounding to get the ideas. When we look through the essay repeatly, we can find out our mistakes and we will be able to adjust it.

3. Scudder uses a narrative approach instead of an essay to tell about the process because it is his way of telling his story from his own perspective. The way Scudder told his story made people look at the story differently and understand it the way he experienced it himself. He did not present it in a basic and standard essay because anyone can read it but still cannot fully understand what he was trying to convey. In an essay, readers might find it harder to process the steps or information that was given while a narrative or a story resembles a conversation and a realistic scenario that can help readers understand better. For example, the way Scudder illustrated his conversation with Professor Agassiz about the fish truly helped readers visualise their characters and personality in the story which makes it easier for readers to engage with the information given. Therefore, when he took a narrative approach, people can read and imagine themselves in his shoes.

4. As college students, we can successfully apply this observation onto the subject, Critical Thinking Skills. Before we learned this subject, we assumed that the world only worked one way which was from our own perspective, our own opinions. However, the world is actually much more than that as everyone has their own perspective and reasons on how they see the world that has its own justifications. From there, we are more attentive to accept the outside world for its differences by understanding their own concept through observation. For example, Scudder discovered new features in the fish after observing it properly such as fringed gill-arches and movable operculum that he never knew existed on the fish before.

It can also be applied to the draft on an essay as it assists us to be more aware of the bigger picture of the issue at hand rather than only paying attention to one side of the story. When we see things with our own eyes, it allows us to justify our points distinctly as we have a stronger belief knowing that these points are valid and happen in real life rather than blindly making assumptions that everything written is true. For example, Scudder did not believe Professor Agassiz when he said he has not seen the most conspicuous feature of the animal until he took the animal home and observed it for a few days himself. Only then, he finally discovered that the animal has symmetrical sides with paired organs, a detail that he would have missed out on if he had not distinguished the animal attentively.

The steps one should take to become a good observer are not listed so that readers will have to think, observe and understand the message Scudder is trying to tell the readers. It is important to have patience while observing instead of having the urge to know the answer right away. For example, Professor Agassiz kept encouraging Scudder to repeat his observation on the fish and make him realise how little he saw before.

4.
