During this time period, family life was generally comprised of the husband working to provide for the family and the wife taking care of household activities which was called patriarchy. Throughout the show, Kevin's family demonstrated many examples of patriarchy. A concurrent thing that happens in all of the episodes is Kevin's mom cooking and cleaning for the entire household while Kevin's dad works. As a result of this family system, Karen's boyfriend starts to state how unfair Kevin's mom is treated in the household and asks if she regrets not finishing her history major to support the family. While he was saying these things, Kevin's mom seem to have been very sad and angry during the entire ordeal. In his workplace, we can see that that their is conflict between labour (Kevin's dad) and capitol (his boss). After Mr. Arnold (Kevin's dad) finishes an exhausting round of phone calls, he decides to take a coffee break. However, his boss yells at him because he did not take his call when needed. The act of a boss inflicting power on a worker shows conflict within the workplace. This conflict shows that Mr. Arnold does not get the appreciation and credit that he deserves for doing his job. In addition, Mr. Arnold displays this unfair treatment at work by not having a well rounded family life. Since he cannot express his frustrations to his boss, he lets out his frustration on his family. Ultimately, this frustration shows that he is being exploited at his workplace. For the immense amount of work that he seems to be doing, he only gets a bunch of flack in return from his superiors. If the company succeeds, the people behind bureaucracy will be forgotten and the head people will get all of the appreciation from the general public. Throughout the show, people can be seen looking down on each other and people thinking that they are of more importance compared to another like minded individual. During the time when Karen started dating Louis, Louis placed himself higher in the hierarchy than everyone in the family. He acted as if he knew more than everyone and challenged everyone's way of thinking. An example of him being affluent in his beliefs is his confrontation with Mr. Arnold about Brian Cooper's death. Mr. Arnold is older than him and is the father of his girlfriend, therefore, Louis is supposed to act very respectful towards him. However, he insults Mr. Arnold on his beliefs and even goes so far to yell at him! This rude and brave behaviour of Louis is present because he thinks his education outshines everyone at that table and therefore thinks he is in a higher place than them in society. His tone also implied that his beliefs were somewhat superior to everyone else. He placed himself in a higher place because of his philosophy degree that helped him formulate these beliefs. He uses his higher education to put himself above others.
