"The impetus behind my work is to bring to light the dark, hidden history of Canada's actions/inactions against the Indigenous people. I often infuse my work with wry humour in an attempt to foster a dialogue; to speak to the realities of being an Indigenous person in the colonial state of Canada.

There a few interesting things about this piece. The first is that the original painting (The Indian Church) was created by Emily Carr, and Sonny Assu attended ECU. Another is that they took a piece and put his own indigenous art over a painted made by a caucasian person. He reclaimed a piece of art work and made it his own. the contrast is amazing, both with the colours and the style (what looks like digital art overlaying traditional painting). Painting is Re-invaders by Sonny Assu

With the insertion of ovoids, s-shapes and u-shapes into the images, both the landscape paintings and the Northwest Coast design elements are changed. The landscapes become marked by the spectre of Native presence and the NWC design elements, traditionally two-dimensional in appearance, acquire the illusion of depth through association with Western principles of perspective. I see these bold interruptions of the landscapes as acts of resistance towards the colonial subjugation of the First People.

I love how it portraits a metaphor of the situation the Indigenous families experienced with modern technology which I assume is an UFO.

the artist's piece called "insert coin" really stood out to me, because it seemed like the artist wanted to emphasize the fact that the first nations people were being treated like objects, and only people to get something out of. I think this speaks VOLUMES to the degrees of how they disrespected their culture. The top says broken treaties which is kind of a mockery statement. It made me think about all the times that they said they would keep their promises such as the sanctioned land and the properties they shared. Instead of being peaceful, they broke their promises and managed to steal (almost, if not) everything that they owned. I feel the satire that the artist was really trying to convey. The artist did a really good job in displaying these statements.
