My favorite book when I was younger was Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown. I made my mom read it to me every night before bed and couldn't fall asleep without it. Today it sits on a bookshelf right outside my room and it reminds me of my childhood each time I pass by it.

Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes was the first book that I read by myself. I remember I read it over and over again because I was so proud of myself for reading it without any help. I also brought this book to my kindergarten class for show-and-tell multiple times. This book introduced me to the concept of accepting yourself because the girl in the book is embarrassed by her long name. This stuck with me many years later.

Something that has opened up my knowledge of reading the world is travel. My family has been fortunate enough to go all over the world to places such as Italy, Switzerland, France, England, Mexico, Canada, Costa Rica, and many more. Experiencing these different cultures and learning tidbits of the languages expanded my horizons immensely. Literacy is so much more than reading and writing; it is seeing and appreciating whats around you.

I have learned so much about literacy through the many babysitting jobs that I've had. Usually the parents ask me to read a few stories to the kids before bed which they thoroughly enjoy. After a few years of babysitting the same kids, they have started to read books to me before they go to bed. Watching them grow and learn to appreciate reading was an awesome thing that I was able to experience.

I've actually been hoping to get back into reading more often like I did in high school. I have a list of books on my phone that have been recommended to me but I haven't found the time to sit down and read a good book recently. What I do read, though, is these quotes that my grandma sends me on a daily basis. Sometimes they are fun like the one below, and sometimes they are more serious reminders to focus and do the best I can. Regardless, I love opening them and reading what they have to say!
