In the beginning, it seemed that he is getting it (with rich clothes). However things changed when he realized that everything need money  (he spend most of his money already). Thing changed. All he saw at first is the rich, shinny world. But he started to see other side of the US, the side that is "bad and poor". Now all he needed is a job. And he was hit by reality that he is not the only one who was looking for job, he had to competed with hundreds of men. 
The last part of the excerpt ended with quite a doom future for him.
