As a 3rd year Psychology student, I’ve known the fact that the study of psychology is somewhat between the proper science but is not usually seen as one of its central fields. Learning the disciplines under Psychology, I can say that I can already contribute to the well-being of the society by helping them be open-minded about what was happening in their thoughts, emotions, and behavior. Being observant to what’s happening around me help me apply the learning I have been taught. From observing how a child develops to actually help them express their emotions in a healthy and positive way as they grow. I’m also hoping that someday I’ll have the opportunity to volunteer and already help the community while still learning different fields of psychology.

Society is an inevitable part of our being for we are all part of it and we will always be. As a student who studies science, psychology specifically, I have the responsibility to utilize my knowledge to improve society and technology. Psychology, more than being a science of the human mind and the human behavior, is also a science that cares for society. Thus, being in this field bears me with a responsibility to ensure that the society where I belong proliferates at the same time as I improve myself. This role is not only a quest for knowledge and a pursuit for innovation, but also a journey towards a better community. Hence, I should work with and for the people. I can utilize the psychological theories and concepts to understand people and help them in the future. My role in the field of science is to discover and learn things that I can utilize to develop technology, but more importantly I also play another role and that is to guarantee that all of the things I do will strengthen and empower society. After all, I am a psychology student who knows, who feels, and who cares.

I have always had the understanding of how science and technology helps improve people’s lives, but now, I can understand better how essential we are to the improvement of science and technology as well. As a future psychologist who wants to focus on research, I see Robert Merton’s norm disinterestedness as a helpful guide when I pursue research; I want to be able to embody the principle of conducting research with the selfless urge to contribute and help our society instead of simply practicing it for recognition or self-gain per se. I have built my own principles and ideas through the help of science and technology, so in return, I want to be able to help other people build on my ideas.

If circumstances allow me to achieve what I want to do, then I would be a forensic psychologist which would have me utilize my psychological knowledge and methods using science and technology to civil and criminal aspects. As an aspiring to be one, it would mean that I have to be very practiced right now so that when I become a forensic psychologist, I can do my job right because someday, I would have to do work that is essential in carrying out law, order, and justice to the society.

In the society we live in, there are still a lot of misconceptions and problems when it comes to understanding psychology. I think my responsibility as a psychology major lies in educating others about these misconceptions as well as the dangers that comes with it. An example of this is the misuse of psychological testing tools among individuals that may lead to "self-diagnosing" one's self. By understanding science, technology, and society, we can realize what the society needs, innovate new technology for them, and improve sciences thus solving these problems.

I have learned in today’s lesson that the relationship between science and technology is pivotal to the improvement of our society. The needs and wants of the people in a community are being solved through doing researches that eventually will turn into “products” that can benefit society. Since I am in my third year of college now, we are required to conduct a research or thesis. This research study can be my contribution to science, technology, and society. As a future researcher, it is my responsibility to conduct a study that helps the community. I want to come up with a study that improves the lives of many people. However, making a research study is not easy. It requires a method that needs to be followed to have a systematic and valid data. Hopefully, whatever research study our group will make in the future can contribute to the field of psychology and, of course, to the society. But my role in the society doesn’t end there; instead, it is just a start because once I become a professional in this field, psychology, my contributions will be more influential and can reach many people.

“Science that does not benefit the people is not science at all.” (Minami & Takeda, 2005)

For such a long time, I, too, fell victim to the notion that science and sociology should be separate. I only acknowledge the link between science and technology and failed to recognize sociology’s influence. Being a STEM student really rubbed off on me-- we are trained to think empirically and to base everything on evidence. That belief finally dismantled after reading Robert Merton’s Sociology as a Science and watching the provided videos of SisyphusRedeemed on Youtube. Having realized that, I now have the role to spread this paradigm and influence the people around me. I correct them if ever I catch them undermining social sciences. Given my background, it appalls me to think that professionals, professors, and institutions deem sociology as a ‘soft science’, compared to Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. This affects me personally as most people seem to belittle me for taking Psychology and Social Sciences, thinking that their course is superior. As SisyphusRedeemed says, all scientists think their belief is superior, but their claim shouldn’t be justified. All fields of science have different tools to approach the Truth or the evidence, per se. Following that, I don’t understand why society itself has to pit these fields against each other, even though they are all under one umbrella. That reaction alone adds to the premise that sociology, science, and technology are interdependent. The failure to acknowledge this interdependence is still evident in today’s society. The whole world is brought into a halt due to the pandemic-- every single one of us is waiting for the advancement of science to create a vaccine. Ironically, many countries fail to heed the predictions and suggestions of scientists in dealing with the COVID-19. They prioritize their countries’ economies, businesses, and tourism; as if they are not greatly affected by the pandemic and vice versa. The only countries that are doing well in this pandemic are countries that follow researchers’ suggestions: early travel ban, and strict lockdowns. Provided that, I hope that the government and its citizens acknowledge the interdependence of science, technology, and society. As a future medical worker or scientific researcher, I aim to promote this interdependence and create a more interdisciplinary approach to the academe, even in my own little way. As a Psychology major, we are being trained to approach every single person holistically, and I think that’s a great headstart for my goal. That way, society will be more equipped in facing unprecedented challenges, such as a pandemic and avoiding wars.

I'd like to believe that my experience in science, technology, and society is sufficient--me being a former HUMSS student who fell in love with social sciences, then transitioned into a science student of Psycholgy. The beauty of it all is that Psychology is not far from social sciences or sociology at all. There is a lovely middle ground between them that lets me bask in my former glory of being a HUMSS student and now, I venture deeper into the technical world of science. With this, I'd like to become a bridge towards understanding for other people. It is unfair to pit two fields against one another. After all, science is for the people and people cannot progress forward without technology. I firmly believe that while these fields have their own unique contribution, it cannot bring balance if we only uplift one of them. An example is today's situation: COVID-19 pandemic and its effects. Science and technology is important to put a stop to the virus, but sociology must not be neglected since it brings light to difficult situations such as the political struggles we face. It's not all about science, because people are suffering and without the consideration towards society, we will fall.

Psychology is a study of the behavior of individual people, while sociology focuses more on groups of people. They area both known as "soft sciences" because unlike chemistry and biology, they are known as "hard sciences". sociology is such an applicable science, because wherever there are people, sociology will be there too. And people are everywhere! Technology is so important these days and that there are so many cultures formed from technology. as a psychology student, this gives us so many opportunities to study more about the behavior of people when using technology.

My parents, along with almost everybody else in their generation, seem to blame both technology and Gen Z’s society to be the reason behind the rise of mental health issues among my generation. That kind of rationalization is what irks me the most knowing that a myriad of other factors, not just technology and a generation’s upbringing, can be the reason behind the issue. And that’s when my curiosity sparked. Curiosity led to fondness, then fondness led to my love for science. I need to find out what the reason is and also to help people with what I know and what I train to be. I am now a budding psychologist familiarising myself with up-to-date technologies and established psychological theories in hopes of answering the questions which society demands.

As a third-year student studying Psychology, I do find that most of the subjects I study are very theoretical, but looking at the bigger picture, does have high applicability further down the road. Psychology is a field that studies the mind and human behavior. It is very much evident that our area is more inclined to have a perspective on where what we do will be beneficial for society. It does not end there. When it comes to the interplay of Science, Technology, and Society, we tend to overlook the benefits we have received from it. Having the privilege to study the field I am in, I feel like I have a big responsibility in contributing to not just society but also in Science as well, whether it be through research or any other way. Regardless of whether our actions may seem big or small, it can lead to a significant impact. As I pursue my career relating to Psychology, specifically in the Industrial/Organizational Field, I hope that the knowledge that I have acquired through college, I will be able to apply and put to good use.

It's more interesting to consider how the people before me who also took Med will probably not be privy to the same things I'll be learning about when I take it, as the medical sciences would have most likely developed over the years, all thanks to recent technological advances or the motivating force of better, more ethical treatment of people nowadays.

Though this answer isn't particularly what STS as a subject is about (my meme will make up for it), it is about how I already found and will continue to find myself between the interplay of Science, Technology, and Society.

As someone who consumes digital content on a daily basis, it doesn’t seem so far-fetched to find a common ground when it comes to matters of science, technology, and society as a whole, because these, to some extent, are related in such that they influence each other. For instance, in today’s current situation of burgeoning misinformation, being responsible with the content you consume and communicate with other people is consequential. The need for fact-checking and discourse is more crucial than ever— with this, we do not only utilize our means to be informed, we also gain knowledge from newly obtained information, and because of this we are able to educate those who do not have the privilege to do so, as well as engage in discourse. This situation shows an active interaction between science, technology, and society. STS is proof that science should be humanitarian as well, that objectivity and methodology go hand-in-hand with empathy—we were granted with both faculties of intellect and will just as we were granted the ability to relate to and with other human beings. The long withstanding debate between science or humanities as the more superior discipline is outdated and pointless. There is interaction in everything. Acknowledging that there has to be balance between both is important, especially as a student majoring in Psychology (a discipline that borders between both natural and social science). Science is not science without technology, as both are not without consideration for society.

The videos taught me 2 concepts that I really thought helped me find my place in STS. The first thing was how some people (even professional scientists) still undermine the importance of sciences like Sociology, Psychology, or Anthropology. This I strongly stand by the argument that these sciences are just as important to learn about like more technical sciences like Physics, Chemistry, or Biology to learn about. As a Psychology student, we have tackled many important discoveries that have benefited human life through our field. The intricacies of childhood trauma and how it translates to the growth of a human would not be understood well as it is now without Psychology. I believe that there is no superior science as they all contribute to the pursuit of knowledge and the creation of new technology that will make countless lives easier. The second concept I found interesting was the concept of Communalism. I do agree that science should be owned by all. Although there are cases where too much freedom in science can be harmful, I believe that the pursuit of scientific knowledge should be available to all, and should be shared with all.

Science would not exist if it weren’t for the people, because science is just a body of facts and knowledge, that we the people, came up with. We’ve been stuck in a never-ending cycle of give and take ever since mankind gained the ability to reason. The society contributes to the development of scientific and technological advancement, yet they are also the ones benefiting from their own contributions. Science and technology are pretty much part of everyone’s life. I, myself, have been immersed in this kind of life ever since I was young. This lead to me to take the STEM – strand in Senior High School, and eventually BS Psychology as my degree in college. However, having been too caught up with all these innovations, I sometimes overlook the causes and reasons for the existence of science and technology. After watching the videos and reading the article, the term sociology brought upon a new light in the understanding of science and technology. I was too narrow-minded to think that sociology is probably not that impactful in my academe but I realized I was wrong, and because of this, I began to take a new perspective on my role in the society. Being a psychology student, my responsibility is more significant to the society than other fields, simply because we’re studying human psyche and behaviors, which is the foundation of a society. Therefore, I should further my knowledge in this field by conducting researches that are relevant and necessary that will benefit human understanding of themselves, which includes debunking myths and controversies, correcting stereotypes, preventing discrimination, and generating ideas that may help in the production of ergonomic technologies. However, these are not only advantageous for better understanding of themselves, but these may also help improving workplace, relationships, and life in general.

Watching the video, I learned that for social change to happen and for the advancement of our society, it must start with us. Science, Technology, and Society starts with the study of how our social, political, and cultural values affect our choice of scientific studies and methods. It starts with our focus of scientific interest. And as the instructor explains about the different principles and concepts that we can use with regards to knowing and understanding the “truth”, I think that having an open mind is important for change to happen. One of the concepts that caught my attention was David Bloor’s four key parts of the strong program in the sociology of science and I agree that being impartial is a constructive way of dealing with ideas we encounter and I think it’s something I want to change in myself too. It’s always better to look at both successful and failed knowledge claims and the most important part is to learn from them. With all the concepts mentioned in the videos I have watched, I think I can situate myself in STS with the goal of really understanding different claims and with the goal to contribute to the society I’m part of.

The truth is, I started off on the wrong foot when I first circumnavigated the arena of Psychology. My not-so-zealous mind was only aiming for an escape route because I had disliked my previous academe field and couldn't care less about which path to take at that time so I've then decided to take Psychology and just went with it. That used to be the case, until I experienced an unlooked-for epiphany. Life used a grim course of action and the consequence fell onto someone I love-the main turning point which made me realize that I really want to study Psychology. Now that I'm in the scientific field, I've disclosed myriads of information about the world and the people around me. With the renewed fire in me, I want to be an instrument for promoting science and all the other affiliated aspects of knowledge. I want to use my voice to enlighten people as much as I can. I also believe that science does not only reveal answers and disprove fallacies- for it generates a path for the betterment of the whole world. Just like what happens with technology where it gets fed by science, technology in return offers convenience to people and even a source of life for some. But of course, for something to work out, those who'll be handling it must know things so as someone who has the faculty to allocate knowledge regarding these, I'd find a common ground and drive other people to understand what our minds are capable of doing.

It’s easy for people to see why science and technology are connected. With science, you research and gather information that can be applied through technological inventions. But what about sociology? Sociology is the study of human society and one can assume science and technology has nothing to do with society. We live in a society. What we surround ourselves with influences our interests, our values, and our personalities. Society does have an impact on science and technology based on what the current trends or demands are.

As a 3rd year Psychology major, we are taught to consider other people and to keep in mind that each individual has different experiences, environments, and struggles. Even though people regard psychology as a “soft science” - treating it inferior to other sciences, like biology, physics, or chemistry - it is still a field of science, where we use statistics and empirical observations whenever we conduct tests on people with mental disorders. However, the kind of science doesn’t really matter, so long as it influences technological innovation, then influences society. We are all contributing to the endless cycle of influence of STS, whether we are scientists, engineers, sociologists, etc.

I think this is the thing holding us from having a better world. If we could all just view the world with an open mind I think our society would be a lot better than it is now. Learning from different point of views, rather than just your own is quite refreshing. With that being said I think I could contribute to the society by imparting to the people I know that having an open mind could change a lot of things, and help you become a better person. If I could help just one person, and that person could help another person, it could lead to a chain of people helping other people. Imagine if everyone would just open their minds to all possibilities, what a world it could have been.

The discussion about the sociology of science made me realize that science is just as broad in scope when it comes to how much bearing it has in society as it is as a field. There is a deeper societal context to science and technology other than it being seen as a stereotypical circle of 'just smart people' in laboratories doing 'science-y stuff'. These 'smart people' do 'science-y stuff' for the betterment of society.

Given such insight, one of the topic that piqued my interest while watching the lecture videos is the topic of disinterestedness. Although it is a given fact that proceeding to follow a route that will eventually lead you to medicine is financially rewarding. Thus, with this opportunity, some people would hold on to such a shallow promise of wealth and have that as their only driving force to continue with their pursuit.

To reiterate, there is a societal context to science and there is the need to see it on such perspective in order for science to progress even further. Our role in society as proponents of technologies and bearer of innovative knowledge is to continuously do our 'science-y stuff' for the people because we are the people – we are society.

Ever since I was a child, I enjoyed learning about new things like water, sandcastles and balloons because of my curiosity. Science has always been there. I acquired new knowledge every day. Now that I am in college, I am learning a completely new and unique science. Everyday, I get to learn about the relationship between brain function and behavior as well as the relationship between environment and behavior. The science that I am learning helps me understand myself and the people around me. I see why we behave the way we do, and I see what we can do in order to become better versions of ourselves. Science helps me grow. However, technology has always been there for me too, and I believe that it goes hand in hand with science. Technology has helped me understand life in an efficient manner. As a kid, I often watched television. This practice helped my imagination grow and boosted my curiosity. Computer games stimulated my mind and improved the dexterity of my hands. It helped my overall wellbeing by being fun. Technology also provided me with a way to be in touch with what’s happening outside. It helped me build relationships with both friends and family with the communication it offers. With the help of technology, I am able to easily access the information I want to learn. I am able to explore and search and find answers.

As a third year Psychology student, I study the human mind and behavior. During the past years, I have learned about the different theories and psychologists who have made an impact on my course. Moreover, my course heavily relies on research in order to prove new theories and create experiments. Through basic science, I have continued to learn because of the ever improving technology. I hope that these two will help me acquire new knowledge that can be used for the future generations.

As a student, I can share knowledge that I have acquired through the experiments we do in class and (our future) thesis paper. My role in technology, however, is to maximize it. With the help of technology, I can gain new knowledge, communicate my results and innovate new ideas. With all the lessons on science and technology that I have learned in my course, I know that I can make a bigger impact in society

As a psychologist student I would like to help people in society to live fully by improving their well being and finding better ways for them to coexist. I can do this by understanding people’s behavior, identifying their problems and offering solutions to these problems.

Science and Technology will always have a different impact to me. Growing up, it was one of the subjects that I needed to take extra effort in learning. Studying it was never my favorite and I never would have expected to be in a science related course in college. I’ve always leaned in to humanities, studying the society, people, and culture. However, it all changed when I was introduced to Psychology. I learned that Psychology is a science that deal with humans and behavior, and that piqued my interest and made me consider taking up a science related course. Learning about Science, Technology and the Society while having a background in psychology helped me understand how they can all be related. It opened my mind further to the possibilities on how I can apply what I learned in my program and my course to the society.

If we are to observe society, it's evident how Science and Technology highly affect our lives. We are living in a generation where gadgets are deemed to be a necessity already. We cannot deny that Technology carries both positive and negative effects. These effects also contribute to the improvement and/or deterioration of one's mental health.

As a Psych major, Science plays a huge role in our program. All of the theories and concepts that we are studying are based on scientific researches and most of the treatments available are already switching to digital interventions. With the continuous advancements of technology, studying Psychology comes with convenience since a lot of data are accurately available online. These researches, who were aided by science and technology, helped many people in society. To be honest, it isn't hard to look for STS and Psychology's common ground. The real matter now is how can we apply these studies and how can we help as many people as we can.

However, I learned that as a future scientist, I could contribute a lot to the society. The laboratory experiments chemists conduct such as analysis of different metals from natural waters, quantitative and qualitative determination of the components of a certain substances may help even ordinary citizens. In the society, we all have different roles to play and the differences should not hinder us to connect because complementarity would be more important than being the same. Just like enzymes and its substrates, when they complement each other, maximum activity may be observed. Hence, a scientist could contribute for technological innovation that would then promote social development.

Science uses technology to make new discoveries with their assistance. Lastly, scientist does not end with just making their research just for themselves. The research studied is done for the contribution not only in science and technology but also to the society. There are researches that are public that would benefit the society. Learning all of this, I believe as a future chemist I would be able to give even just a small contribution to science, technology, and society.

Thus, I can see the relevance of being a chemistry and sociology major where they are both trained in the science and art of studying and understanding the interactions, processes, outcomes, and consequences of each phenomenon that are applicable to its own field.

As a student and a civilian who is a part of society, I situate myself as a major player in Science, Technology, and Sociology. We as individuals are the major players in the said disciplines, we are the ones who develop and benefit from them. It is important for us as players to enlighten ourselves of how these disciplines work with one another, work for us, and work as individual disciplines. It is important to learn these aspects of the disciplines as they affect us as individuals, they have their own dynamics, and they are unique from one another.

These disciplines affects us as individuals that is part of society, sociology helps us to understand society and how social dynamics work, it helps us to understand ourselves, our own societies. Additionally, society and ultimately ourselves, benefits from technology, it makes our lives easier however, it also affects the social dynamics and norms. Meanwhile, technology is the application of the fundamentals of the sciences, and this discipline is bound to the norms of society. From these, we can see how the three disciplines work and their dynamics with one another, we see how all is connected with one another. And we as major players in these disciplines must understand them so to ensure that this positive and constructive balance would not be disturbed by reckless and rash actions that we take, and so that we can continue to develop and further as human beings.

As a chemistry student, my role in the society is to understand the different principles, reactions, and mechanisms of different compounds because these concepts can be useful in the future especially for innovation of a novel product, manufacturing, and treatment of a disease. At present, we are trained responsibly for knowing a matter's particular component and properties, as well as to be equipped in laboratory practices especially with the synthesis of products. Additionally, we are trained to have profound expertise in research as we study particular topics and communicate the results through formal and written reports. These reports are beneficial in a way that the aim of the research is to promote results that are relevant to the society at present.

In terms of technological aspect, my role as a chemistry student is to utilize the instruments and gadgets used in the laboratories. The instruments used in the laboratory function for the purpose of observing and enhancing the given property of substances. Technology has been significant in laboratory works for production of a more efficient procedure. Moreover, as a student, it is my goal to maximize technology as a medium in learning and searching for knowledge from a wide variety of sources.

In the future, I want to connect my knowledge in chemistry through forensics as a way of helping the society achieve justice through the intertwined relationship of law and chemistry. The significance of the job as a forensic chemist to the society is to develop a more systematic way of helping underserved people. In the same way, what we do changes correspondingly with the diverse circumstances in STS. The focus of Chemistry is on science and technology as they say, but it has been essential as well in shaping the society from working out on essential substances like chemicals to as far as the numerous cosmetic products that people make use of on a daily basis. Discoveries learnt by a lot of chemists, or scientists in general, would have been a great enabler and yet many were being unnoticed.

Driven by the problems occurring in the society, future scientists, like us, pursue to find and provide solutions through research works. In order to execute research studies, technology is necessary. As a result, the society will benefit. Another way to look at it is that the researchers are the ones who provide the technology, through the use of science, that will make the lives of the people, who makes up the society, easier.

The first lectures in Science, Technology and Society taught me that STS is interdisciplinary as it analyzes interactions between the three disciplines. The cyclic relationship of the three could be explained since social values demand scientific research to address the problems in society and these researches should be applied through technological innovation but still considering social values.
As an undergraduate student of the Chemistry program, I was more inclined to science and technology but not much in sociology. I have an impression before that natural sciences, where chemistry belongs to and sociology are things that are not too related. But not until I encountered STS, I realized that the things which scientists are studying and doing are all for the betterment of the society and that these two couldn't be studied separately. As we look into the history, there were parts when science and technology made the world flourished like what happened in Industrial Revolution or how Dr. Fe del Mundo strived to invent incubator that made babies healthy up to now. However, there were also parts that science and technology took part in destroying the world like Fritz Haber, who through chemistry started the development of chemical weapons that play role in the devastating period of World War 1.
Since I'm still on the learning journey to be a scientist or a doctor if I'll have a chance, I have not yet achieved something to contribute to the bodies of knowledge in science nor an impact on society. I must now learn how to use science responsibility by taking into account the social values and considering first the good and bad effects of the things that I will do. In the future, through the concepts I will learn with STS, I may not be like Fritz Haber but be more like Dr. Fe del Mundo that made an impact in making the world better.

Aside from expanding our knowledge, it does also focus on the development of our skills along with the relevant qualities needed in order for us to take responsible and appropriate solutions with problems relating to science and technology. Hence, I believe STS leans more on the practical and application side which I am really happy about since as a future chemist, I want to be able to develop something that will be of great help in the society someday. My dream really is to enter the business industry, specifically the manufacturing industry. And we all know how each and every corner of a manufacturing site is made and highly influenced by science and technology; technological advancements, which are guided by scientific knowledge, have always been of great help to better meet the demands of the consumers.

Also, I want to remind everyone that just because you are taking this specific degree program, does not necessarily mean that you are limited to taking the career path that this program has to offer.

Currently, the society heavily depends on science and technology, which I find ironic since not all the person knows what the real contribution of science and technology to society is. Science, Technology and Society or STS mainly focuses on the societal role of science and technology in the emerging modern and contemporary world. The contributions of this interdisciplinary are interconnected with the contents of other disciplines such as law, economy, and chemistry. Therefore, we can conclude that every decision and result are important to analyze and to process because one mistake can massively affect the other fields in a chain reaction effect.

My role as a chemist in science is to become a discoverer. Exploring the undiscovered elements in the world to better understand how the universe and organisms originate. I can also investigate the interaction of different atoms at quantum level and compare it on the macroscopic scale. Chemists are always aiming to publish a journal article in order to fill some knowledge gaps that can change our perspective about the world we live in.

My role as a chemist in technology is to become an inventor. Producing innovative techniques and instruments that would speed up the data gathering in making a research paper and making the life of the researchers simpler. I can also make an equation that can lead to a breakthrough and can be used to solve the problems in the science world. Since technology is the key driver to development, it can advance our economic status and can improve our health systems, education and infrastructure.

My role as a chemist in society is to become a problem solver. I can lend my knowledge in chemistry to mitigate environmental pollution and climate by telling people to reduce their carbon footprint since this is one biggest social issue that the world is facing today. I can also save human lives and the marine ecosystem from heavy metal poisonings such as arsenic, mercury and lead by detecting and decontaminating the specified water samples.

Overall, the application of chemistry in STS is limitless. But not all application leads to the good pathway. Some of it can lead to war, violence and greed for power. But, the thing that makes it more entrancing is that despite its wide application many are still unfamiliar with its contribution not only in the world of Science but in the society as a whole. Thus, Science, Technology and Society as an emerging discipline opens the door for the public to recognize the interplay of these three areas that actually construct the ideal society the world aspires.

What is discovered by science is applied for the advancement in technologies that the society utilized. And what the society demands will be scrutinized by science in which technology will bring into the physical world. As science majors then, it is our duty to approach problems holistically and suggest ways that would not compromise the value of one field over another.

Science, Technology and Society covers a broad range of different fields as it is often defined as interdisciplinary. I have recently learned that STS was able to produce people with various interests and skills that landed on different careers. STS was able to establish roles that are all equally important in the society. It makes sense because the course emphasizes not only the innovation and development but also the interests of people. It clarifies the relationship between what makes science and technology and what the society needs. These three concepts that build up this course generally depend on each other. In Chemistry, our experiments are dependent on particular conditions, and we are often asked about the significance of what we’re doing in the lab or in our research. It is also very significant that we are definite about our objectives in doing such activities. This is because we should have a goal in our minds and that goal should be something that will not only teach us, but will also encourage us to direct our knowledge towards the betterment of the society.

I once aspired to be a journalist and a writer whose objective is to be the voice of the unheard through my words. I concluded by then that I was born to be in the field of social sciences, but I eventually grew up to be with natural science. My love for science grew more and more each day and it was then that I decided to aspire to be a neuroscientist whose goals are to improve lives with science. Ultimately, I found a role in Science, Technology and Society as the word “and” which connects science and technology to society. This also signifies that society should not be overlooked when trudging the path to science. I situate myself as someone who yearns to contribute to both science and society. It’s going to be a challenging journey, and I still have a long way to go and a lot more knowledge to gain. My constant reminder is that the key to science is to never stop being hungry for answers.

It is a crucial job because one mistake or a wrong evidence presented in court may send an innocent person behind bars. It may also be a tool for fraud and corruption, so people working in this field must stand by their principles and remain unbiased to help the victims receive justice.

STS makes me understand how science and technology plays an important role in our society.

Science plays a major role in the improvement of society by generally improving the quality of life of the people through technology; because of this, it is not surprising that science and technology can be found in every sector of society. The healthcare sector, for instance, uses science in combination with technology to treat problems in health and discover new diseases. Even the business sector makes use of science to predict trends in economic activity.

Given the benefits of science and technology to society, it is my responsibility, together with other aspiring scientists, to promote and continue the development of technology by supporting the culture of research and improving the appreciation of science in our society. As it currently stands, Filipino scientists are underappreciated by the Philippine government despite their proven contribution not just to our country but to the whole world. As a result of this, unfortunate incidents such as the worsening of the pandemic in our country and the Manila Bay dolomite sand issue are occurring due to the lack of scientific expertise of the officials chosen by the government to preside over these affairs. Moreover, the killing of the environmentalist in our country can also be traced to the lack of the appreciation in science as implies that people fail to recognize the importance of preserving nature and natural resources to the local ecosystem and biodiversity.

Combating misinformation, especially scientific misinformation should also be one of my responsibility as a student of science as this wrong information can be potentially harmful or even fatal not just to a single person but also to groups of people. Vaccine scare, an example of misinformation, can be very deadly as it can cause the resurfacing of a supposedly eradicated virus. Poliovirus remerged in our country due to the low vaccine turnout resulting from weakened trust in vaccines following the Dengvaxia controversy. Aside from clearing misinformation, one of our roles as future scientists to advocate for the ethical development and use of science and technology. It is undeniable that science and technology have the potential to be used for harmful purposes. As an aspiring scientist, it is our role to recognize these potentials and advocate for the regulation of these potentially destructive technologies.

Science, technology, and society are all factors that are dependent on one another. Moreover, it is quite difficult to pin yourself amidst all of these macro level topics, as their range is broad and prestigious. However, something I realize in myself is that science, technology, and society is the essence of who I am and the world I live in; in essence, we are the factors of these three topics, in everything we do in how we live our lives.

First, in science, I can see myself in it from the way I wake up in the morning, to when I go to school, even until how I feel before I go to sleep at night. Since the field of science I am focused on is in Applied Mathematics, I can see this not just when I attend my classes or do my homework, but it how much money I spend on random quarantine purchases, how many hours of sleep I get at night, and in the measurements of how I live everyday. As people say, math is the language of the truth for it cannot lie, and for me, it is the language in which the science of ourselves abides.

Second, technology is all around us, especially in terms of remote learning and the pandemic limiting social interaction to a corpse of what it once was. In my opinion, I situate myself in technology especially as a learner of coding, because I feel like I, alongside my generation, are the future innovators of these processes and technologies that allow us to live our lives in near normalcy, despite the juxtaposition of the pandemic. I feel like technology is the future, and it is my responsibility to be part of that future.

Lastly, in society, I apply both science and technology in the way I interact and contribute to the world around me. I believe that through my field of expertise, as well as the values that have been formed with me, I have the capacity to make the society around me better, and change the lives of all those around me. Especially now, where we are faced with the threat of all the 'good' people in our country leaving in order to pursue better opportunities, leaving the country unprogressive and ruled by those who think they can take advantage of how gullible Filipinos are to promises. I believe it is my purpose to use science and technology in order to create the society I want, and to pave the way for a better tomorrow, one step at a time.

Taking Applied math as a program might be difficult to see the application of STS with our course. But remember that we are also the language of science and this is where we connect to STS. But those numbers and answers are nonsense if we will not connect it or apply it in other aspects just as Technology and into our society.

But just like math itself, STS is something that we cannot remove in our lives. With this we are able to understand how social factors affects new ways of understanding, new practices, and also help us in understanding our contemporary world.

As an applied mathematics student, the field of STS is vital for me to be able to use my knowledge in mathematics in our contemporary world. Mathematics is not only a field of study, it is a universal language that explains how everything in our universe works. It transcends the fields of Science, Technology, and even Sociology. With mathematics we are able to explain and predict the different phenomenas that are happening in our universe. It helped us understand how science works. It gave us Technology that made our lives easier. It also helped us in developing social theories that we use today to understand our human society.

Being an applied math student I am expected to be scientific and technologically literate, since mathematics encompasses science and technology. With the use of mathematics we can explain how science and technology affects our modern society. That is why math is very important in STS since it acts as a fundamental tool for us to explain the interconnectedness of these fields. And as an Applied Math student this puts me at an important role in the field of STS.

People, including I, would usually think that under the College of Science, students study pure science which we commonly equate to biology, physics, chemistry and the like, but in reality Math contributes a lot in the Science and Technology world.

As an Applied Math student, I believe we just don’t merely solve “unrealistic” equations and problems — we help seek patterns, relationships, and even predict the movement of the future. I perceive that through these skills that we learn, we can help understand the trends of life which is very important in observing how society copes with the advancement of science and technology. Moreover, I believe that Science and Technology would not fully function without the study of Mathematics because they are interconnected with each other wherein, to be able to completely analyze something, it is important to see how it differs and change as time passes by in both scientific and societal factors.

Studying math may be shallow or useless for others but I think just like any other courses out there, we can have a huge contribution to the world and its people.

(Just like the attached meme, I believe that we, applied math students are an integral part of life)

Science, Technology and Society is more than just scientific researches and technology innovations. STS studies how society, politics, culture, and other elements influence such scientific processes and the technology outputs itself. It integrates sociological concepts and social values in their scientific research to be able to produce innovations that would benefit the scientific community, and the whole society. In these modern times, numerous researches and production of outputs had been made in which we can see almost everywhere. We use these technologies in our everyday life for an easier an more efficient way of doing things.

As a student pursuing a mathematics course, I acknowledge how the combination of mathematics and science are very much essential in developing technological advances. The concepts of the different fields of sciences are used to form ideas and theories, while mathematics helps in making those ideas come into fruition. In my own view, I believe that students play a big part in the technology-society interaction. As early as now, we, students, are already exposed to different technologies that we can use for our future careers. Our role in this interaction is to use and exhaust all those functions of the different technologies because those things are made for us. We should recognize those inventions and use them for the betterment of our society.

As a part of society, my role, as well as each and everyone’s, is very crucial in the field of science, technology, and society. Even though we may not see it in a very evident manner, our own little actions contribute to the creation of new knowledge and afterward, the utilization of this knowledge leads to new developments, which fundamentally alters the way humans live. When we do little things e.g. counting how much something is, estimating the hours of sleep we can get, estimating the amount of time a task would consume, etc., we are incorporating science and technology, through ourselves all while being able to contribute something that may seem very little but is really important, such as being able to come up with ideas on how our life can be made easier by developing new advances in the future.

Science and technology are the keys to make developments and improvements for our economic advances and also in the health systems, education, or any other sectors of our necessities as humans; however, without us, humans, the constituents of the society, doing such things would not be possible in the first place. Thus, these three are all really interdependent with one another, making it look like they are in a cycle that when one is taken out, the cycle would break and would not be able to function as well as give off the result that is expected. Overall, we always have to remember that we are as important to science and technology as they are important to us since it is aforementioned that science, technology, and society work hand in hand to be able to come up with developments and improvements.

This course focuses on the connection and interaction between the society and the science and technology sector. The relationship between these is proportional since as the society evolves into a more modernized one, the science and technology also develops. This can be seen in how the society has changed over and how new discoveries are made in order to address the changing needs of the community. Furthermore, the increased in knowledge about concepts in science was made possible with the help of mathematics. Examples of these are gravity in physics and stoichiometry in chemistry.

Given the information above, I can easily relate myself in Science, Technology, and Society as a mathematics student. Basic concepts in math that I have learned such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division can be applied in various complex scientific fields. By learning more complicated concepts in math, it already becomes a contribution to science and technology since complexity increases along with development. I also believe that as a mathematics student, I can help those in the natural science sector with the knowledge I have in Math especially in solving unanswered mysteries that are yet to be discovered in science. By doing this, the society will be able to understand and know the unexplained phenomenon that were too complex for humanity before. Therefore, we can say that mathematics is vital in the development of science and technology, in order to answer to the needs of the modernizing society.

Moreover, STS has a hypothetical when it comes to the interdisciplinary field that studies the conditions under which the production, distribution, and utilization field of scientific knowledge and technological systems occur.

I cannot think of a more fitting course to take than STS considering we are currently living in a time where the connection between science, technology, and society is at its most apparent, all because of COVID-19.
Ever since the start of the pandemic, society has suffered immeasurably in the hands of the Coronavirus. Families ruined, countries closed, lives lost, etc... In response, scientists all over the world have been working tirelessly to apply all the scientific know-how they have to find a vaccine and to try and make things better. Then, with what they've learned, they utilize or create tech that is the culmination of the research they have poured their lives into, all to save the lives of millions people, all in an effort to save the world from this terrible disease.

All 3 aspects of this course also have significant influences in the field I desire to become a part of; in medicine. Science is all too obvious, given that various disciplines come together to form the medical field and its various nuances. Technology is what allows us to apply our scientific knowledge in the first place: it is what lets us create and apply viruses, keep infected patients alive and be able to recuperate, and to enhance our knowledge regarding the virus to greater heights. For knowledge without a way to apply it is meaningless. Finally, it is society that is the reason we have science and technology in the first place. The entire purpose of the existence of these 2 aspects is to make life easier and better humankind, after all.
As an aspiring doctor, I must steel myself with a plethora of knowledge regarding all 3 aspects of this course in order to ensure that I will be making the right decisions when I am challenged and given the opportunity to contribute to solving this global crisis, for I know that this pandemic is far from over, and that with proper understanding and comprehension of this course, I will be able to do my best in making a positive impact in the world.
