Molasses in France were sold 6 pence a ton, while Britain would sell them 3 pence a ton. The colonists were not so happy, they pointed out that they were being taxed without the right to vote in the British parliament. This made it harder for the Colonists to pay their debts and taxes. The British eventually gained control over the currency of 13 colonies. Colonists soon faced money shortages it was becoming almost impossible for them to pay their debts. They became frustrated, their trade was decreasing. Which basically gave the British power to manage the importation and sales of tea in the colonies. The tea that they now sold was less expensive than other teas because in this way, the tax seemed hidden. British had an unfair advantage of selling tea in America. They were put in place in order to punish the colonists for their participation in protests against taxation. The colonists then met in Philadelphia in September for their First Continental Congress. The Congress passed the Declaration of Rights and Grievances and rejecting the Intolerable Acts as well as the Declaratory Act.
